Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates announced Thursday that he will transition from day-to-day responsibilities at the company he co-founded to concentrate on the charitable work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates will continue on as the company’s chairman after transferring his duties over a two-year period.

He should start a charitable foundation for all the victims of Windows.

Whatever happened to his infamous quotes that the internet is just a fad, and that he will wipe out viruses in 2 YRS?

None of it matters anymore, people will need a new bobble head to hate, should be interesting, though odds are the Bill bashing will continue on forever.

Many people make rash quotes, fact of being in the public spotlight, but from a garage and with a few geeky friends he did achieve a dream everyone strives for, a comfortable life... with a legacy that wether you think its good or bad will live on way way past our humble achievements?

I dunno, I have still to fathom the craze of knocking the big guys in business... you become sucessful and the masses turn of you as if your are evil incarnate, some who critisise actually have very good experiences and reasons but the majority only do so because they think its the "IN" thing to do.... Bahhh Bleet Bleet like little sheep following the flock!

Yes... I would honestly agree the Microsoft corporation have made mistakes, but so do every other company, its just theirs are more public, the fuss over bundling WMP, IE etc into "their" own operating system stating its anti-competitive is the funniest thing I have ever heard..... this is more the other comapnies in the same sector not getting their act together and competing, if shoe was on other foot, they would be protecting their rights to add what ever they like to their own product, just as MS are doing! ( its like buying a Ford Focus and saying I dont want your bundled engine, I would liKE a BMW engine thank you )

All I have to say is that good on Bill for having a charitable foundation in which he shares and donates his massive wealth to good causes.... DONT see many other CEOs of large companies doing the same?

/just my rambelings on a friday afternoon ( not directed at anyone but just generalisations ) :)

apart from this one @ Insomniac ~Billy could never wipe out virii as it would be seen as "anti-competitive" :D ;)

My understanding is that he never invented the code for Windows.

He bought Q-Dos from a company, then re-tailored it and sold it to IBM, which gave it market penetration.

Windows was then developed from that.

That, and his many infamous quotes, is the reason I think he isn't that clever.

Just lucky, or maybe clever enough to see an opportunity and take advantage.

But as far as coding and programming, he probably knows as much as me, which isn't much. :)

As far as leaving the helm of Micro$$oft, that won't make any difference to the behemoth.

He's still probably the largest shareholder, and will have more influence, either directly or indirectly, than anyone else.

He first had to sell the OS to IBM and then the rest of the world you cant sell something like that to such a huge company without knowing a fair bit about what your selling, most of the stuff I'v seen regarding the OS were one on one consultations with gates and IBM engineers

Whatever Microsoft did to leader Gates isnt in jail,if he was guilty he would be,you could argue that 30 billion can buy alot of judges but I doubt it

The world would be entirly different we probably wouldnt be on this forum now,a mix mash of diffent OS's and nothing being compatible,He owns the internet without him we'd all be outside getting some exercise :)

But ofcourse without England the Internet wouldnt have been invented-at least for a while "I'm supa patriotised ATM,world cup time :D "

To be fair, his charity donates more money than any other, and more than some countries do.

If more companies and individuals with the means did the same, the world would be a better place for far more people.

Instead, most companies and their rich CEO's, only care about how they can make more money and cut costs.

I don't like or agree with some of the things Micro$$oft say and do, but that shouldn't detract from what the Gates Foundation does.

Sure there might be alot of negative things to say about Bill Gates out there, but atleast he is giving a lots of money to charities.

I heard along time ago that when he dies over half of his money is going to charities.

I thought the concept of having "windows" originally came from Apple.

Micro$$oft, Apple, and Linux to a lesser extent, all copy and borrow each other's ideas.

The Windows code though, was developed from Q-Dos.

Oooh I totally agree with that! It's like Wal mart. I don't like some of the things they do but man can I get a good price on groceries there. :)

The Gates Foundation just donated 12 Million to the Libraries of New Orleans. (I hope they do something for the other states hit by katrina as well) and that's just awesome in my opinion.

Stepping down was probably a great thing for him to do at this point. The way I read it, he was the one who said which products shipped when. If he's busy doing other things how can be be so closely involved with things like he should be?

Na, I'm glad for him. This'll do him and Microsoft good.

*Nods* That's how AMD processors were born too. They copied straight from the Intel chips that AMD was producing at the time.

I think to an extent it's like that with everything. There will always be someone with a bright idea and then someone who can make that idea brighter.
