Having a problem with my motherboard and win xphome sp2. XP was not booting (only to the WP screen and freezing) so tried to repair with my new xpsp2 disc from MS. Didn't work so reformated my HDD (NTFS as before) and tried again to reinstall xp sp2 -- again failure.Previous xp disc(lost somewhere in the house...world) has no sp on it and was able to boot without trouble and then install sp2.

Went to soyo site and found mb will hang on booting with sp2 due to need to update bios. tried to follow their instructions but am not having much success.

Only way I could get to the bios to flash it with the new update ws to install another win program -- only had win 200 pro available to use. Now am getting the message that the bios upgrade is incompatible with 2000. Computer still shows both 2000 and xp home on it when booting up. but will not boot toxp.

How can I fix this so I can get xp home sp2 on the computer and functioning again?

If sp2 is causing the problem, dont install sp2 till you get the bios update installed, install just the xp, then go get the bios update. ed

Sounds like a problem I am/was having. I tried to upgrade a CPU after flashing the BIOS the mobo could support a faster processor. So while I was at it I tested several processors.. eventually the system would not boot, it froze. On with the troubleshooting.. eventually I got it down to ACPI. Every time I was trying to load XP it would freeze at "starting windows.." so I did the 'f7' bypass on ACPI and the system loaded and runs fine.
I am going to tweak the ACPI and try reloading, now it just bugs me that ACPI is not installed and I get that "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen.

Can;t just install without sp2-- the disk Microsoft sent me has sp2 embedded.

    What is ACPI?

ACPI is coded by M$ to control the power system of a ACPI compatible BIOS - basically. ACPI does powersave, turnoff, ect..
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
Doesn't not always work 100%... so usually disabling it helps.

soyo should give you an option to download your bios update and put it on a floppy, then you have to boot your computer from the floppy, and it will update it. then you can install xp w/sp2

tried to do just that - update on floppy and boot from it per soyo instructions. Problem was
Win 2000 would not accespt it- said it was incompatible with win 2000.

were you able to make the boot disk, or does it give you that error as you try to make it? Or, does it give you the error while it's booting?

maybe use someone else's computer to make the disk?

Nope. Doesn't work. Now get chksumm error which accdg to Soyo means the bios chip has to be sent in to be reprogrammed. However, since this is the 3rd 41875 motherboard I got under my one year warranty and it is about a year old, I think it is foolish to do that. I can't see thowing good money after bad. I think I should either get a different company motherboard or a new cheap computer. What do you think?
