    Asus socket 478 P4G8X Deluxe rev. 1.02
When powered up, it goes thru the NVidia 'post' for the AGP card as normal, the screen clears, then it says "Award BootBlock Bios v1.0" with the copyright year and so forth under it. It'll hesitate for a couple of seconds, then comes up with a "BIOS ROM checksum error" followed by "Detecting floppy drive A media..." at which point it will boot to the floppy drive (if there's a disk in the drive, duh ;) ). So, what the heck is this 'BootBlock BIOS' and should I flash the BIOS? It's not my PC, and there's no HD or optical drives, and I hooked up a floppy just for the purpose of flashing the BIOS, but I thought I'd post here and get some input before I did anything. In the meantime, I'm gonna hook up a HD and a CD and see if I can load Windows. At this point, I can't even get into BIOS setup (unless it's not F1 or F2 or Del). So, there you have it! Any help? Ideas? Suggestions? Much thanx!

I wasn't sure if this belonged in this forum, or the hardware forum, so I put it here... if it needs to be moved, go right ahead ;)

EDIT: I just checked out the Asus site for info on how to flash the BIOS. Wouldn't you know it; this model of mobo isn't listed!!! I looked at the 'how-to' for some other models, but they required using the original driver CD that came with the mobo, and (of course) we don't have it. I did download the latest non-beta BIOS and the flash tool (aflash.exe). So, any help with this also will be greatly appreciated!

Well, I hooked up a CD and a hard drive and they made absolutely no difference in the overall scheme of things. Because I can't get into BIOS, I can't set the CD to boot first.... So- do I flash the BIOS? Seeing as the PC is basically a door stop right now, I don't think that a BIOS flash is going to hurt anything; even if it goes horribly wrong..... BUT- like I said in the above post, there is no BIOS flash 'how-to' info at the Asus web site for this model of motherboard, so I'm a bit lost.... I suppose I can just follow the steps listed for a different model and hope for the best, unless someone here can offer some more detailed information. Any help or ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanx!

Check the cmos battery voltage, but the boot sequence (bootblock) has stopped where the system is looking for the Bios flash in the floppy- it would seem that your friend has tried flashing the Bios, and it needs reflashing, as it was unsuccessful.
Have you tried to set Bios back to default ?- (jumpers/cmos battery).to reset the Bios to default.

Yeah- I used the motherboard jumper to clear/reset the BIOS and it made no difference; put a new battery in also.... I guess will flash, even tho' I'm not 100% on exactly how to do it for this particular MB. I've flashed plenty of BIOS's in my time, so I'm very familiar with the whole process, but it seems that every model of MB has it's own peculiarities when it comes to BIOS flashing. SO- I'm going to use the info from a different model of Asus MB; it uses the same flash utility (AFLASH.exe) as the board that needs flashing, so I figure if I follow those steps I'll be OK -confused-
