I have a Probooks 4520s with some strange issues. I attempted to do a system recovery. When it restarted during the process I got a setup cannot continue message. After that, was not able to access the recovery partition. My thought at that point was, I had a bad hard drive. I installed a wiped 250GB hd. Installed Windows (Windows 7 Home Premium)with no problem. The next day I received recovery discs from HP. Formatted the drive and began the install. It got to the part where it restarted and again, setup cannot continue. I then wiped the drive and started over. Install succeeded with no problem. Now, when I do Windows updates and the laptop needs to restart, it does not complete the configuration. Reverts changes. Have reset to bios defaults at some point during the process. No difference.
    Any ideas?

The problem you have then is a failed Windows update, go to Control panel/windows update/update history check for a log entry under status that shows a failed update, make a note of the update number and post it e.g KB266****.

Thanks. It was a .net framework3.5 update issue. Got that solved, but it still leaves me with the question of why I had to wipe the hard drive rather than just format to install Windows. 2 different hard drives. Same thing. It is not a huge issue since the laptop is functioning. I would just like to figure out the cause. Bios is the latest version.

If you simply format the drive using Windows format, remnants of the previous installation are left behind and can cause problems. It's always best to wipe the drive first, let Windows format afterward and re-install Windows.

Many would be very surprised how much junk Windows leaves behind, most drive makers have programs that write 0's to the drive, always pays to check out their sites for down loads.
