Ok i am not a pro, just a fairly experienced user.

Here is the deal. I am putting together a new rig using p5k-vm motherboard from Asus. The board refuses to recognize the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 HD. I have been every which way around the bios with no luck. The bootup selection menu (F8) does not see the drive. The BIOS doesn't see the drive.

My ancient PC from 2004 with 2 Sata 1 controllers recognizes the drive fine and is able to use/format it.

Here is what i have tried to do so far with no luck:

    • Enable IDE mode for SATA in bios
    • Update the bios (0803 3/25/08)
    • Remove/Put back the 1.5/3.0 gbit jumper on the drive
    • Unplug everything but the drive from the board
    • Disable/enable USB controller
    • Try all other SATA ports
    • Call Asus tech support -they said if bootup menu doesnt see the drive then its either the MB, the Cable or the HD thats faulty. We know its not the cable or the HD since it works on other machine.

Is there something i am missing here? Or is this Mobo faulty?

    Would appreciate your thoughts. :confused

As for components, this mobo has onboard video, so i am using that ATM, i have a LG DVD-RW Drive, 3,0ghz Dual Core e8400, Corsair 6400 DDR2 Ram, HD is again Seagate Barracuda 7200.11

Do you happen to have a 2nd SATA hard drive laying around? Or maybe a friend has one you can borrow? What about a SATA optical drive? SATA DVD burners are pretty common these days...... I know you said that you updated the BIOS, but have you reset it by moving the jumper and leaving it there for a minute or two (Be sure the power cord is unplugged when you do this)? Every motherboard I've worked on that had both SATA and IDE had a setting in the BIOS to enable/disable SATA and to enable/disable the IDE. I'm assuming you've found this and tried every possible combination? Is the drive formatted? I know, I know, it shouldn't make a difference if it's formatted or not, but maybe format it on a different PC and see if that makes a difference.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for your reply.

    Yeah, drive is formatted.

Yeah i have disabled and enabled sata several times.

Havent reset the bios however. I did reset it to default in software, but i cant find the jumper to save my life. The manual says nothing about it. There is an empty jumper rack above cmos chip, but without anything being in the manual and nothing being on the board itself i am at a loss.

Either way, i have bought a new motherboard. I love asus but this experience has caused me to go with another brand.

Actually, it is mentioned in the manual. I downloaded it and it's on page 1-26 (which is Adobe Reader page 38). The jumper is near the SATA headers; if you look at the board from above with the keyboard/mouse PS2 ports in the top left corner, the CMOS jumper is in the lower right corner. I guess it doesn't matter since you did buy a new board, and chances are the Asus board was faulty; you shouldn't have had to pull out all sorts of tricks to get it to recognize a hard drive. Personally, I think Asus motherboards are over-rated. It seems that lots of folks think they're one of the better brands, but I disagree. Just because their price tag is high, doesn't mean they have high quality motherboards. I have had many, many issues with Asus boards; most of these problems were a few years ago so maybe things are better now. I have had GREAT results with Asus video cards however, so maybe I just ran into several bad motherboards in a row.
