Bios

ok on that ol compaq i have. when it boots up it shows big red letters COMPAQ and never tells anything about the computer bios . i need to find the bios string so i can update it so my 40gig HDD will work. how can i find this information? the bios is very iffy on what i can change...there are little selectors like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and you can move the switches but i duno what they do. the motherboard is Gigabyte GA 5SMM i belive if that helps.
