Bit by every virus known to man?

All of the sudden my system has gone haywire. I keep getting ads to "clean" my registry, ads telling me I am infected, or getting redirected, notices my connection has been dropped (it has not), bulletins telling me I need to add or update Java, add new version of some media player, ad nauseam
Many of the ads have an X button, but it and all other buttons simply activate the program, meanwhile anti Malware is giving me an all clear.
Holy unwanted garbage, Batman. Wha' happened?
