My son has an Acer AS5532-5535 laptop, his screen became fragmented and then froze. We tried to power the laptop down and it would not power down, we unplugged it and removed the battery.

After letting it sit, I tried to power it back on, immediately the fan tried to power on and then it didn't, it just stopped and the laptop became very hot. Last year we had the motherboard replaced, the battery and the keyboard ( all under warranty, which is no longer the case). I tried different scenarios, with power cord and battery, just battery, just power cord.

I stink with tech talk, so need a little patience. My son is heartbroken, it is lifeline, he is an Aspie kid.

    Thanks!

I was able to restart laptop for just enough time for my son to get the files he needed from computer, it was a fluke. I am wondering if it could be a power supply problem, maybe a short in the wire that opens and closes the lid, or a complete mother board failure? I have read others having the same problem and they are able to hook there laptop to another monitor to see if the display is bad, I do not have a desk top monitor so is there a way to hook it up through my working laptop? I am betting it will not display anything, it does not seem to go into boot mode. I tried putting a recovery disk in the cd drive but although it started for a brief second and the light came on, it stopped. I am able to remove the disk from the cd drive and the light comes on, but other than that it is dead.

I appreciate thoughts on what it could be. Thanks.

There is no way to hook it up to your laptop, but you can use a VGA cable (blue with round pins) to hook it up to a flat screen TV. From the symptoms you describe this sounds like a graphics card issue.

This laptop is probably five or six years old, and I can't say I've read any positive reviews from anyone who has owned it for more than a year.

Thanks I will check it out with the VGA cable. The laptop is 3 years old, bought it new for my son's first laptop, so it is far from top of the line. I just need it to keep it running until December. If it is the graphics card can it be swapped out, or do I need to replace the motherboard?

Usually the graphics are integrated into the motherboard in "entry level" laptops.

These days, tech is becoming more, and more "disposable" with the speed of advancement, for lack of a better term.
