    Hi guys
Last night my laptop was working fine this morning i turned it on but the screen is black, the lights (power, battery, WiFi,)turn on so does the fan but nothing on screen just black. I have tried the hard reset (remove battery and power and hold power button) several times but doesn't work, I have connected to an external monitor but still nothing. When I have it turned on and press the caps lock or number lock the lights DONT come on.

    It's a lenovo G555
    Windows 7 home
    Please help !!:confused

If you see nothing, like the name of the computer when first turned on and an external monitor displays nothing, there is a good chance that the video chip on the motherboard is gone.

Remove the battery then try turning it on. Do you see anything other than a black screen?

Tried booting in safe mode but still black screen. Didn't make a repair disc as I seem to remember at the time the computer telling me there was no need to as its a lenovo with one touch recovery(great tool if you could see the screen )!!. . . . Tried removing the battery and starting up but still nothing, tried holding g the power button (as advised a power surge might help} but still no joy . . . . .I don't have access to another windows 7 PC as this is the only one I have and its only two years old and out of warranty of course!! Any suggestions for changing the video card? Or would this be worthwhile even attempting??:confused

I borrowed a laptop that also has windows 7 and I made the backup disc. I inserted the disc and started laptop but still black screen. Does the computer automatically boot from the disc or how do I use it ? :confused

ok so i tried restarting the laptop with the disc installed but nothing, so i decided to try again ....and again after several tries the laptop started eventually (Dont know if it actually booted from the disc or not...didn't hear the drive making noise)....yippee..... :-D so my question now is what do i need to do to prevent this happening again .....I'm afraid to turn it off now in case it wont start again....

thanks but you seem to forget that my problem is I cant see anything on screen,
but never mind, don't know what i did but it seems to be working again and i agree that i don't think it booted from the disc:confused......again my question is "Do I need to do anything to prevent this from happening again?"

Ok so after turning on and off about 30 times it eventually turns on not sure if it booted itself or from the disc (as its still in the drive)........

Tried your advice above and not sure if I did it properly or not but there were no results found!

Ran chkdsk but couldn't see any results as window closed before i got to see them.

Cant get into system recovery to get to that screen you attached without restarting the laptop but am afraid to try restarting again in case it wont start.......is there any way of doing this without restarting??

did a system restore and it restarted so hopefully this will solve the problem

So system restore didn't solve the problem

System restore does nothing if your video chip is dying. You can't fix hardware problems by using a software solution.
Read post # 4. You never answered this question
"Do you see anything other than a black screen?" that includes connecting an external monitor.

No I don't see anything other than black screen even when connected to external monitor and at this point I will try anything I only tried system restore because I couldn't get into system recovery. I turned on and left it running with black screen for a couple of hours then I turned off and then restarted and yeah it started. . . . . So now that its working again what do I do to prevent this happening again I'm afraid to turn it off again in case I can't restart it again

There is not a thing you can do to prevent a video chip from dying. Eventually the screen will remain black.

On a laptop you have two costly choices: replace the motherboard or see if anyone will desolder and replace the video chip on the motherboard.

any idea what would cause the video chip to die??? the laptop is only about 2 years old, I should think that it would last longer than that!

would probably be just as cheap to replace the laptop!!
