Blank CD drive

After installing sp2 my cd drive won't read any disc. I was running Nero 5.5 at the time. After uninstalling Nero everything went back to normal. I've also tried Acoustica which I just got today (which I prefer) but I get the same conflict. Uninstall the program and back to normal again. Using WMP 10 in the interim

I have xp professional installed.

 

I assume you are using Windows XP. Have you visited the manufacturer websites to determine if patches are available?

 

Yes, including Microsoft newsgroups. The problem is mentioned but the solution they offered was that sp2 fixes the bug. I have tried other programmes as well to burn cds but as soon as I install them I'm unable to read a cd.

 

It may be that the XP firewall which is turned on by default with SP2 is causing your problem.

 

Bingo!!! I turned off the firewall and reinstalled Acoustica and the problem has gone. I wouldn't have thought the firewall would cause it.

I don't get it either. My software is working fine though. Even Nero reinstalled and worked.

 

Nothing per se. It is the fact that the install software tries to modify files that the firewall is set to protect that causes the problems as far as I'm aware. I don't know exactly how the XP firewall works as I'm still using W98SE.

 

I understand the mechanics.

What I don't understand is what that has to do with a CD drive?

Anyway, as long as it's working.
