    The facts:
Hey guys. I'm running XP Pro on my home network. the problem pc is a desktop wired to my linksys wireless router. I had a mess of a virus some .exe that I executed on my external HD about a month ago. (i know, I'm an idiot) I ended up not loosing any data from the external HD and had to reinstall windows on the pc as I couldn't login or repair. Finally I could get in to windows and went thru all of the "read & run first" steps listed on this site and computer seems to be virus and malware free it's back to running great. I went thru the about:blank & hsremove removal instructions. I don't find any traces of malware with the suggested programs that I've run. Everything comes back clean.

    The Problem:
Intermittently, I loose my homepage (google). This occurs with both IE & Mozilla. I double checked my setting within the browser anyways and everything appears good. I don't get an error saying the page cannot be found. It's simply blank and shows that it's done loading. if I type any other site in the address I can connect just fine it's only my homepage. The homepage is only lost once in a while for brief periods of time. (maybe an hour) I was finally able to run a hijack this log while the error was happening. (attached) I changed all my network ip (static), passwords and ports for my network just in case. I've ran various tools looking for a trojan that might have been overlooked in my virus and malware removal but i never find anything. If you have any ideas of where to go from here let me know. Thanks in advance

You're absolutely right! I didn't setup Hijack this the per the instructions on here. sorry bout that. I went thru the read & run last weekend and thought my problem was solved. since then then, the problem has happened twice that I'm aware of. I reinstalled hijackthis again to give you a new log. If you need me to go thru the the entire read & run process again I can but It wont be for a while. Please note: This most recent hijack this log was done while the homepage is loading properly. the previous one was done while I had no homepage <--- if it matters.

    Other than this clutter:
Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

After clicking fix, just exit HJT.

There is nothing of note in your HJT log.

If not, we can reset your IE defaults:

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

I restored the defaults using your fixME text below, the problems still there. I've attached a new log for kicks. it seems to happen around the same time every night. I believe my Sygate firewall was turned off (not by me) when I noticed it tonight. is it possible there's some trace of the previous virus left? in my firewall settings userinit.exe shows up, its located in my %root% windows/system32 so I didn't think i was a threat. when i had the virus previously my "logon" was hijacked so ?maybe? 011 and 013 seem odd on my hijack log too. I dunno man, any other thoughts for me?

I mentioned that I went through the read & run me 1st last weekend and thought it cleared up the issue. i would do it again if necessary. I don’t know what the two updater folders are. They appear empty. The tea timer is already disabled in spybot, only the sdhelper is checked. All of the IE tweaks are unchecked. Here are the logs.

Sorry Tim, I thought I removed the java 5 already. there was an error running avenger. I was able to manually delete C:\ftjcdghe.bat in explorer. For some reason the File Attach feature isn't appearing on this site for me right now. I don't know if its on my end or yours but I can't attach the logs. I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow for 1 week. I'll check back to see if I attach the logs throughout the night. thanks for everything, I'll check back soon. Just noticed all of the Font & Hyperlink features aren't working for me either.

Yes, try the avenger fix again ....it is only the two items that need removing ...if you still have an error ...use windows explorer to find and delete them.
C:\ftjcdghe.bat ---> may not be there.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\e^woqxuy.sys
    Let me know.

    OK...that worked!

Are you having any other issues?

    No problem...
You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!
