I have a laptop with Windows XP on it. I open it up yesterday after having hybernated. It was acting funny so I rebooted it. Now when it boots, i get the Windows Xp screen that it is booting then the screen clears, but instead of getting the desktop I get get a blank screen with a mouse cursor. You can move the cursor around but nothing else happens. Same then when I boot into safe mode, I get the safe banners around the top and bottom of the screen, but that is all I get, again I get the mouse cursor and it responds but nothing else. When I try to boot it up in comman mode, again just a blank screen after the initial stuff. I took out the hard drive and put it into a usb enclosure I have and connected it to my main computer. I ran chkdsk and Microsoft Windows defender without any errors on it. Also ran Malwarebytes Antimalware software and it too came up clean. At a lost to what has happened and what to do next. I tried to use the recovery cd that came with my Laptop, but all it wants to do is reformat the disk and start over. Really don't want to do that unless I have to. Any suggestions??

    Thanks,
    Dennis

when you start the computer can you access the task manage by pressing ctrl+alt+del.if the task manager appears in the process tab check to see if explorer.exe is running,if it is not running try clicking on file then new task run type in explorer.exe press enter .see if this brings up your desk top.
    good luck

Tried using the ctrl-alt-delete key, but nothing happens. You can more the mouse around on the black screen and that is all. You intially get the windows logo screen and the slider bar below showing it is loading, but then it clears but never get anything else from that point on.

have you tried the LAST KNOW GOOD CONFIGURATION setting when in the advanced options.if you have a xp installation disk you can also use the recovery console and run the fixboot command from there.your boot ini may have become corrupt and the fixboot command will rebuild that file.

I have tried all the options that is available from the menu you get when you do a f8, including using last known good configuration, command mode, safemode, etc. They all give you the Xp log screen with the slider bar underneath showing it is loading in software or doing a checkdisk, since i have to turn the computer off, and you can see disk activity when it is doing it, but when it clears the screen just before it starts to give you the login page or desk top, it stays black but you get the mouse cursor and that is all. Also nomore disk activity is going on.

I also tried the windows recovery and did a fixboot. Still get a blank screen after windows loads.

Hooked a external monitor to the laptap, same thing. Just get a blank screen after windows loads.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

I was reading about a new piece of malware/scumware called Advanced Virus Remover. It's fairly new and blocks access to task manager (ctrl+alt+del), regedit and possibly prevents explorer from loading (symptom might be a black screen - no icons).

The solution is to boot from a CD, specifically the Ultimate Boot CD,
    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
and delete the file pavrm.exe which is the thing causing all the problems.

I don't know if that is your problem but it can't hurt to boot from a CD and at least look to see if you have this on your computer. If not, booting from the CD would not harm your computer.
You may also be able to find a tool on the CD that can help you fix the problem.

How do you use the ultimate boot cd if you dont have access to an XP machine that works to get the system files? is there one that already has system files in iso format?

The UBCD boots up before windows loads.
Your problem is windows isn't loading; that does not prevent you from running a linux live CD or any other CD that has tools on it to fix windows.

It sounds like you have never done this, so my solution is not for your first attempt at fixing windows using another tool. I suggest you find a friend that has done this before and get help.
