Our family relatives tried to make a family website a few years ago and it really didn't work out very well.
Too many Indians and no chiefs. Well, they want to try again. I was thinking more along the lines of a family blog site
(if that is do-able) or maybe even a facebook account. Not many of them have a facebook account, but if that is the best way
to go, then that'll be the choice. Whichever would be easiest to access and work smoothly will be what they go with.
What they want to be able to do is have any FAMILY RELATIVE able to post info, pics, etc onto the site or page at their
discretion without having to go through a webmaster or administrator and that only other FAMILY RELATIVES would be
able to view this stuff. Can it be done, and how safe is it? Anymore information you can give me would be gratefully
appreciated. Thought I'd ask some experts.:confused:confused

My family used to use (they may still use it, but I haven't been in it in forever) myfamily.com: https://www.myfamily.com/

The site is actually pretty nice. As long as everyone has an email address, you just invite those you want to have access. It's free at startup, but that gives you a limited amount of bandwidth...at least that's how it was. Anyone who has been invited and has joined has the ability to upload pics and post info they want on there.

If you don't want anyone outside the family to be able to see it, then Facebook is definitely not the way to go. In fact, most blog sites wouldn't be good either, since primarily bloggers want other people to be able to read their work. MyFamily is pretty good...I'd forgotten all about it, but know several people who have used it.

Thanks a ton!! All the young folks were recommending facebook for ease of use. I don't think anyone cared if the general public could view the said homepage, just worried about them being able to go any further. I'll look into that myfamily. thanks again.;)

Myfamily is similar to facebook, but it requires a password to get in so it's about as private as any online site can be.

I think you can actually set a Facebook group up as private as well. You'd have to set all your security correctly to make sure that other can't access it. Someone else may know more about that.

You can set up a group so people have to have permission to join it on FB, but there's still a lot of information you can't really hide on it. Not really a big deal, I just think it wouldn't be the best option for those who want to keep most everything private. Also, everyone who wants to access it would have to join FB, which opens up a whole new can of worms.

I'm not anti-Facebook, far from it, I just am assuming your family is much like mine...you've got the total computer geeks, and then you've got those who can't program their VCRs without help (and yes, they still use a VCR). ;)

I actually logged on to myfamily.com and it looks like my family has gotten rid of our family site. :-D I was trying to look at it for more details. They are all active on Facebook now, so I guess that's why.
