    There is a big problem with the registry.

    C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE

    Code:
    =========  reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" =========

    ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

    ========= End of Reg: =========

    =========  reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" =========

    ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.
    I do not see any valid backups that we can use either. I am sorry but I am out of ideas on how to restore this computer to a booting state.

    So I assume I am out of luck with trying to fix it?

    The problem is I do not see another SOFTWARE hive that you can try to use. The ones I see are from 2006-2009 and are in a Windows.old folder (upgrade windows installation).

    Perhaps someone else can help but I am out of ideas.

    Do you know anyone else on this forum that might have any ideas as to a possible fix?

    If not, what process do you recommend I go through to start over, and get my files from this drive? I have 2 1TB drives (one of them is the one with the files), and a 1TB external drive.

    Also thank you for your help :).

    There a lot of intellectuals on this forum that may be able to help.
    Your topic is in public view so anyone can post other suggestions.

    Preferably copy the files you want by slaving the unbootable hard drive to another working computer. If you have 1TB/2TB hard drives, this will be the fastest way. Not sure if you know how to attach one hard drive to another working computer or not but you must take precautions. Definitely do not do this while the harddrive in question is powered on -- Make sure you both PCs are powered off first prior to attaching another hard drive to another working computer's power supply. You may have to change the boot order of the hard drives later incase it the working PC tries to boot from the non-booting hard drive.

    You're welcome.

    Think I can hook up my external 1TB drive to my desktop, boot into minixp, backup my drive onto the external one, wipe the drive, reinstall windows 7 on it, and take my files and documents from the external backup and put it onto the drive?

    Yes that will work too.

    You may have to double-click the "Mount Removable" icon on the desktop of MiniXP in order to get it to see your 1TB External USB drive.

    Just verify that all the data you want from the non-booting is on the 1TB external before formatting it and reloading Windows.

    I think you may already know this but just to be sure, all programs from the non-booting drive will have to reinstalled. Things like left for dead 2, MS office, your anti-virus, etc.

    Yes I am aware, and that is the one part which I fear most about this :(.

    quick question. In minixp there are multiple backup programs under Hiren's boot cd. Do you know which one to use, or is there already one in minixp that will create a backup?

    I would just recommend copy pasting from Hiren's Mini XP. Those other programs are mostly for full hard drive backups (including the Windows OS). Not recommended in your case.

    So copy documents, images, etc onto the backup?

    Yes. You may want to save things like Favorites, desktop too.

    Ok I'm back with a bigger issue now. So I hooked up a new drive to my pc, tried tried to doing a re installation with the Windows 7 Upgrade CD and a decent way into the install this popped up, "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer".
    So I restart and it then gives me the error "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation". I tried using the vista CD and the other Windows 7 CD, but both ended up giving me "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation" when it tried to load the installation.

    Any ideas?

    The drive I tried to install Windows on, was a brand new drive, not the one that wouldn't boot.

    Windows 7 does have AHCI drivers but change the BIOS to IDE mode if you can and see if it will install. If it works, you will have to Enable it in Windows 7 before you change it back in BIOS. I do not know what is on your disk now that the install failed but it might be a good idea to do the diskpart clean all command.

    There may also be a problem relating to the drive itself. New drives are now Advanced Format and the AHCI drivers in Windows 7 may not be compatible. I am not quite sure about this but you can read it here.

    I do not know what chipset you are using on your motherboard. Is it intel? You may have to add the storage drivers during install.
