Blue screen of death, virus?

About 20 minutes ago, I switched on my computer and after it had read out the system stats, etc. a blue screen with white writing flashed up for a split second. It was too fast for me to read the writing, but after that my computer rebooted and afterwards said that windows had failed to start and suggested that I do a repair. I chose to just load windows instead and thankfully, my computer came on this time.

Everything seems fine now and no files or what not seem to be deleted/corrupted and I even restarted my computer to see if I got the problem again, I didn't. I've never had this happen before and I'm not sure what brought it on. I did download this program from the internet, but I've had it before and it didn't cause any problems before, that's the only thing that I think could have brought on this issue.

I've deleted the program now, but I'm a bit worried that there may be a virus on my computer. I can't do a full virus scan atm because it literally takes over 2 hours to do a full scan on my computer and I don't think my ant-virus is very good anyway; it's Microsoft Security Essentials and it's a free anti-virus.

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this to happen and whether my computer may have a serious virus?

I don't know what Windows version this is so I'll give you the W7 info to stop the BSOD from flashing by so you can read it and let us know what it says on top, like IRQ_IS _NOT_EQUAL or some thing like that, also look at the bottom an record what it says there to the left of the opening parenthesis, the rest does't matter. (other versions are similar). Start/ System and Security/ System/ Advanced System Settings/ Startup and Recovery and untick the 'Automatic Recovery', this will now make your machine to not reboot on it's own. I always apply this change whenever I re-install or build a new machine. Let's see what you get on your next BSOD.

BTW, MS Essentials is good to have.;)

Sorry, forgot to mention my Windows, its a Vista.

Alright, I'll do what you suggested, but since I've only gotten the BSOD once and I've rebooted the computer twice since, I'm not sure if it will show again...?
Btw, I also did a free virus scan with Norton and it all it found were some very low risk cookies. The only thing I can think of that caused the BSOD is that program that I said I downloaded, I downloaded it today and got the BSOD today. Other than that, I haven't been using my computer for much else besides the internet and downloading some iTunes.

So what's the program if you'd be willing to share that info? Anyways, proceed with the steps that I outlined, it won't change a thing with your machine, just freezes the screen in case of a BSOD so's you can record the errors presented, then you can reboot as normal. Vista has the same path IIRC.(haven't used it for a couple of years)

It was just some program that allowed you to create/edit coding to a video game. It wasn't even a big file, just 500kb I think.

Anyway, turned on my PC this morning and haven't got the BSOD again yet so hopefully it was just some one-off thing. I was wondering if it would be possible to find the BSOD error message in the event log in my computer? I've tried looking in there, but I'm not sure what it would come under (Application, system, etc.).

Just been browsing through the event viewer/log, the nearest I found that looks like a BSOD error code is this one:

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16890, time stamp 0x4a619d6d, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 7.0.6000.16890, time stamp 0x4a61bcc1, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0003c531, process id 0x10c4, application start time 0x01cc9cbc59211587.

    I also got this:
'Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

    DETAIL -
2 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\S-1-5-21-2423680101-4182854955-1426860519-1000:

I've got a feeling the 'iexplore.exe' means internet explorer? I actually don't even use it which is why I've never updated it, I use Google Chrome as my browser.
