Hey, I'm new at this, but I really need some help and I was referred to your site. Okay, here's my situation:

I woke up in the middle of the night to hear my computer beeping and clicking. It was a black screen that said "No boot filename received. Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter"

I've tried inserting the Windows XP installation CD, and it got me a little bit farther. I thought it was going to set up Windows again and it started extracting the files, but instead it brought me to the blue screen of death. The message said STOP: 0x0000007F

It also had something along the lines of
Check memory, Maybe uninstall new hardware

I was walked through taking out the RAM sticks and switching out the two to see maybe if one was bad, but I got the same response from both

I don't know if the RAM sticks are bad? or it's the hard drive or what?

I also don't even know if I'm using the right terminology, but if somebody can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've tried getting into Safe Mode with F8 but it won't go anywhere. When I turn on the computer, I can't get far at all. I can't get to my desktop whatsoever. The farthest I've gotten is to change the BIOS, and like I said before, where it brought me to the blue error screen, but other than that: nothing.

Nothing seems to be working. There has to be some hope right?

well I don't know much on how to resolve this issue. But, I've found this on the internet which describes the error: 0x0000007F

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137539

    SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message while running Windows:
    STOP 0x0000007F (UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP)
Back to the top Back to the top
    CAUSE
This error message can occur if either of the following conditions exists:
    • Your computer has hardware or software problems (hardware failure is the most common cause).
    • You try to over clock the speed of your computer's processor (for example, you set a 150 MhZ processor to run at 187 MhZ).

Doesn't sound like you've overclocked your pc so you can disregard bullet #2.

Just to be sure your boot order in BIOS is CD first then Hard drive?

To find out what the beep means check your mo/bo manual. The different beeps should be described somewhere.

i've checked the beep pattern already and it's continuous short beeps that repeat until the 'insert system disk and press enter' screen appears. it said that this was a memory problem. but i've already replaced the RAM and i still have the same problem.

yes my BIOS is set to boot CD first

To check memory issues run memtest86. Also depending on which BIOS you have, see if this helps.

cmoul6, on the BIOS the reason I asked is that 99% of those with this error say it relates to the computer trying to boot from a network card. I realize this probably isn't the case for you as their error includes PXE in the statement. I just wanted to make sure that your BIOS is trying to boot from the harddrive immediately after the CD which it probably is.

i've tried pretty much everything. i'm just going to assume that there's a problem with the harddrive, so now what?

If you can get into the bios? you could disable all shadowing and caching.......I had a similar problem after installing XP on a new PC ( blue screen of death) I had to disabling shadowing and caching to get XP to fire up.

Not saying this is the answer but it's worth a try.
