Blue Screen On Start Up, SM works

So today I decided to system restore my computer to about 5 days ago. I left the room and when I came back it was stuck on the blue screen. I restarted and it takes me to the black screen that says start normal mode, safe mode...etc.

When in normal mode it goes automatically to blue screen. However, it lets me get into safe mode where it says your system restore was successful.

Here's where I think the problem might be. I forgot that I had updated my video card driver or integrated graphics on the HP site. That's the only thing I can think of that's causing the blue screen. I also had a mild form of Google Hijack Virus but I don't believe that it would be causing blue screen.

I'm running Windows XP Media Edition on an HP a1250n. My blue screen says it's detected a problem and has shut down to prevent further damage.

I'm not sure how to fix this by myself, so please help me. Thank you.

I'm sorry about the vague message. Let me post the Stop Message:

    STOP 0x0000007E (0x0000005 0xF6AA3CDE 0xF79F79C0 0xF79F76BC)

    ati2mtag.sys Address F6A89CDE at F69F0000 Date Stamp 42a65b93

Last Known Config did not work but safe mode does. Thanks again.

The first thing I would try is to go into Safe Mode, then roll back the driver from the updated video card.

If that does not help, see some troubleshooting tips at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182/

Is there any risk involved? Like could I possibly cause the BSOD pop up in safe mode as well?? Or will I be okay trying this and be able to get right back in SM?

Here's the weird thing. I checked my driver in SM and it says it's the one from 2005 when I first got this computer.

When I had updated the driver at HP on tuesday, the computer booted fine for 3 days and worked like normal. Did I somehow mess this up when I did System Restore today when I restored it to monday, which was the day before I updated my driver?

Maybe I need to update my driver again? Or would that not make sense? I'm confused.

This part of the error message suggests that you may be having an error with your video card, which I would assume is an ATI card. I think that since you did a system restore, it might have wiped out the updated driver, thus causing this error message. My best guess would be to update the driver again for your video card. To find out what your video card is, open up the start menu, then select the "Run" option, and type "DxDiag" without quotes in the field. Then select the Display Tab at the top and see if you have a ATI video card, if not you most likely have a Nvidia video card, in which case you need to go to the cards website and download the latest drivers for that card.

    Nvidias driver page: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

    ATI's driver page: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

If you need more help feel free to ask! ;)

Safe Mode will probably use "safe" drivers, so it's unlikely that you will get a BSOD from installing the new drivers.

If the drivers from the HP site worked well (before the System Restore), then I would reinstall these same drivers.

Well I tried downloading it and installing the updated driver. It went really fast in safe mode which almost made me think I still have the updated driver.

Still led me to blue screen. Anyone know what I should do next?

    Haha, I can't believe I didn't think about this!!

    System Restore > Undo Restoration

Voila! I booted back up into normal mode. I'm guessing it had to be something with the drivers and not the virus. However I still have it. Any recommended programs that will totally delete the Google Hijack. I have Avast and Superantispyware.

Thanks for the help!! Sometimes things are more simple than they seem haha.

Actually I think I'm wrong again. I have a trace of the Alureon Rootkit virus that may attack drivers. I just ran Hitman 3.5 and it said it deleted several files. Is there anything else I should do to rid of this problem?

Well, you can download and install Malwarebytes.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Just download the free version and run a quick scan, it should be able to find and wipe out any nasty virus that gets thrown at you! ;)

Do this and tell us if it fixes the virus problem. :)

Ok well I've run Hitman 3.5 in normal mode. It found a bunch and deleted. Then once again in safe mode where it found none. I ran Avast in safe mode after and it found 9 threats and moved to chest.

Those were all mostly Win32 Hilot Trj

And I ran MalBytes in SM and it deleted 6 infected registry keys. And in normal mode it found none! Let's hope it's clean now and not one of those viruses that hide and copy themselves everywhere. Guess I'll do another scan tomorrow.

    Hi ConfusedMan.

Since you have avast and you plan to do another scan anyway, why not make it a "Boot-time Scan" with avast?

As both MBAM and avast have identified malware, your best option is to, read and follow the steps in the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide. Then start a new thread in the Malware Removal explaining the problem and attaching only the logs requested and created while following the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" guide.

Once you've posted your new thread, please don't make any changes to the machine(add or remove programs and the like) and just be patient as the Malware Removal Experts are extremely busy. They deal with problems on an oldest first basis. They will get to you as quickly as possible and get you squared away.
