Blue Screen - virus or hardware???

About 4 days ago I started having a blue screen error that gives me these stop codes:
    STOP 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x84c23347, 0xF63AD578, 0x00000000)

This coincided with letting my daughter use my computer and though she isn't aware of any alerts or downloads that might have infected the computer, I've had times in the past when my kids visited sites and infected the computer.

I've run the cleaning procedures; not much was found (two infected files I think) - root repeal gives me a different blue screen (kernel something) and I've never been able to run root repeal successfully on this computer.

Logs attached, any advice or insight is much appreciated. Not sure if I am still having blue screen issues; I'll advise if it happens again tonight.

    I'm still having the problem.

Pursuing a path other than virus attack, I updated the BIOS and then had a repetitive system error so I did a system restore. That solved the new system error I was getting but still getting blue screen stop error 0x0000008E sometime when booting.

If anyone can take a look at the logs and let me know if there seems to be any virus problem, that will allow me to pursue or eliminate one possible source of the problem.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi, MelanieS

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ C:\Documents and Settings\Jean\desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
NOTE: Consider updating Mozilla Firefox (3.6.2) to v3.6.6

    Step 2:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    efwodnpi

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 3:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 4:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 5:
Now go to this link MGTools and download the new version of MGtools....overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

Okay, finally had a day to work through these steps.

First, I believe that my computer may be eligible for a fix from HP and that the blue screen may be due to overheating after intense use which will be fixed by them to make the fan turn on earlier.

However, still interested in cleaning my computer.

I cleaned up the desktop. Initially this computer was on loan to me so I didn't want to store stuff on the drive but that's been cleared up now so I got all but the essential shortcuts.

I followed your directions. I thought I disabled virus and firewall before running Combofix but the log says the firewall was still up.

I did upgrade Firefox and Adobe also recommended flash upgrade to avoid instability so I did that too.

Also, a diagnostic from HP gave me the following info which I don't understand; details tab gave me no information and google search nothing. But I noticed the first one was in the code you had me run so in case it is pertinent.

    vemunecu: Device has a problem
    zrsgznly: Device has a problem

    Logs attached.

    THANKS!

    Hi again, Melanie

    Step 1:
Please remove this from your desktop to a more suitable directory - like "My Downloads":
    jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe

    Step 2:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall -
    Step 3:
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:" part of the window.
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the "Reboot now?" question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

    ;)

I see no issues to be addressed here in this forum, Melanie.

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
