Hello. I have a desktop running XP Pro, and everything has been great for a long time. Last night I used some software for burning Playstation 2 DVD's; including Apache 3, Gnie's IML2ISO v4, Sonix Gran Turismo 4 DVD5 ripper v1.02, DVD decrypter & PSS Downsampler. I followed the directions on backing up my copy of Gran Turismo 4 for PS2 found on another site (I can post the address if anyone needs that), and everything worked great. This morning, my computer was stuck on what I think is called a POST screen, which I normally only see for maybe 1/2 a second when I am booting up the computer.

After I rebooted the computer, I had a blue screen saying there was an error, and it needed to reboot in order to save the computer. When I rebooted again, I recieved a message saying overclocking failed (or something similar), and I though that was strange since I am running my AMD 64 3200+ at stock speed. Everything in the BIOS looked the same as I've always had it as well. Now when I reboot, it gets all the way to the desktop screen, showing all the program icons, and my wallpaper and such, but the bar on the bottom never appears, and then I get the blue screen warning again. I'm not sure if these programs are the cause of the issue, but it's the only thing I can think of.

I can, and have booted into safe mode, and in fact am typing on this computer right now, so I can do some troubleshooting. I have BitDefender Pro AV, Spybot SD, Spywareblaster, Ad-Aware SE, and a large HOSTS file, if that helps. I can post a hijack log, if needed. I haven't taken one yet, so If I need to do so, please tell me exactly what/ how I should do that.

I apologize about the length of my post, but I would like to get back up and running ASAP. Thanks in advance for all help, I will be checking this post quite frequently until this is resolved, thanks!

    Justin

I think my problem is possibly a virus. I have tried to run my AV, and a few online scanners, and after a few minutes, the computer reboots. This is the only time that the computer reboots, though. Any thoughts? Can I remove it manually if it is indeed malware? Thanks.

I have been browsing on the net, and found a Symantec tool "FixBmalE", which gets rid of some specific malware (worth a shot I suppose), as it was running, I did notice it got hung up on "C\WINDOWS\Help\filefold" and then it rebooted, yet again. I am doing all this in safe mode by the way. After doing a bit more research on the net, I found that there have been incidents of hijackers in the WINDOWS\Help file before...

I cannot, unfortunately, find any way to resolve this, or even verify if that file is to blame. Any ideas?

OK, I tried the recommended measures, per prior post, and the problem persists. A few points: When I ran Ad-Aware, it got stuck about 3/4 of the way through the scan. It stuck on C:\Windows|WinSxS\x86_System.EnterpriseServices_bo3f5f7f11d50a3a_2. When I ran Spybot SD, everything came back ok. When I tried to run Bitdefender online scan, it wouldn't run. Also I have Bitdefender Pro for my antivirus program anyways, and if I try to run it, I get an error message telling me it can't open, and it aborts. When I ran Panda scanner, it rebooted the computer during the scan.

Not sure what to do from here...

How did you get on with windows defender ?

Did you try any of the alternate scans ?

Forgot to post the Defender scan. It ran normally, and came back with no problems present. I will try some alternate scans and report back, thanks for the fast reply!

Well, I ran Spysweeper, and it found some cookies (no big deal), and then it started displaying errors stating that Windows is unable to save data log. It couldn't erase the cookies, and then it rebooted again.

I ran McAfee Stinger, and it ran smoothly until it hit file Windows\help\filefold.chm, at which point the computer rebooted, yet again.

I think that this filefold.chm is to blame. Can anyone verify this and tell me what to do next? Thanks again!

I may have missed the post. But, have you tried uninstalling the software that you used to do these backups?

Can you post the actually BSOD errors?

If you can't, but can get into safemode, then you should be able to right click on my computer, select properties, then advanced, then startup and recovery "settings" then uncheck "automatically reboot".

I believe this is correct, I have been using vista since the public release, so, I'm a wee bit sketchy now with xp. :(

That .chm file is a compiled html help file.

If it keeps crashing at this point, simply rename that file to something else, or back it up and delete the original.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I still have the problem. WHen I deselected automatically reboot, and tried to boot up in regular mode, I got the blue screen with an error STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003,0x851E27A8...etc. Was this what you're looking for?

I also tried to rename the file, and when I did, it just rebooted, so I'm still stuck. Is there a way to remove this in the registry or something?

    Thanks again,
    Justin

need the whole stop info ....or you could look it up here:
Here's a great site for identifying and (with any luck) addressing your Event ID errors:
    http://www.eventid.net/events.asp

You will need to register just like at MG's ...but will come in handy in the future.

Might want to check your ram ....could run memtest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/MemTest_d350.html

is it the same code each time it crashes?

Another thing you can try, is to boot into safe mode, then click start, then RUN, the type in msconfig. Press enter.

Next within msconfig, go to services. Check the box to HIDE all microsoft services. Then uncheck all Non-Microsoft services. Press ok, yes to reboot, into normal mode.

Does the computer then boot up?

If yes, then one of these non-microsoft services is causing some issues.

I ran msconfig and stopped all non Microsoft services, and then rebooted. The computer still did not boot up. I did write down the error message (and it is same every time). It states: "Kernel data inpage error".

So am I correct in believing that this problem lies in the Microsoft software then? Any further ideas?
