    Hi,
A few days ago while playing a Tiger Woods golf game, my Dell XP 400 (desk top computer) closed the game down and I received the dreaded blue screen with this message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If it happens again, follow these instructions.

Check for adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options, such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Start Up Options and then select safe mode.

    Technical Information:

    STOP: 0X0000008E, (0XC0000005, 0XBF962276, 0XBA078AE4, 0X00000000)

    Win32K.sys - Address BF862276 base at BF800000, Date Stamp 51ad4593

    Beginning Dump of physical memory.

    Physical memory dump complete.

Contact system administrator for further assistance.

I'm not sure how to proceed with this. Yesterday we received another blue screen message:

    Microsoft Windows

This system has recovered from a serious error.

A log of this error has been created.

    Error Signature:

    BCCODE: 100000ea

    BCP1: 84c36BB0

    BCP2: 85330268

    bcp3: F7A4DCBC

    BCP4: 0000000l

    OSVER: 5_1_2600

    SP: 3_0

    Product: 256_l

    Error Report Contents:

    C:\DOCUME ~ l\(our computer name) ~ Locals ~ l \Temp\WER6a9d.dir00\Min 081113 - 01.dmp

    C:\DOCUME~l (our computer name) Locals~Temp\WER6a9d.dir00\SYS DAT.XMl

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, Version 163.71 encountered a problem and needed to close.

Ok, I'm not sure what other info I need to add but yesterday (8/13/2013) we did install most of the Microsoft Updates even tho we didn't know which ones were necessary. Our computer receives automatic updates but there were 10 or so that weren't.

I did look at the system properties and it showed under hardware that the SM Bus Controller Properties Device Status listed the driver/s for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

I didn't want to do anything since I'm not sure if it'll make things worse, so I came to the experts for advice.

Can anyone walk me thru this mess?!

    Thanks!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks

Can you find and copy the dump file to your Desktop, zip and attach it please: \Temp\WER6a9d.dir00\Min 081113 - 01.dmp

The SM Bus controller is something of a red herring, ime, it's not needed anyway, Windows works as expected without it.

The above could be a clue, do you have the latest display drivers installed? The below, based on the crash types, points to a driver at fault as well - though it may be that the graphics card itself has a problem.

    Hi,
Where do I find the dump log at? I am also not sure how to check for the latest driver install either.

As you can see, I am not good at fixing computers but I am trying my best.

    I really appreciate your help.

    From your first post: " \Temp\WER6a9d.dir00\Min 081113 - 01.dmp", it's in a temp folder somewhere.

I can't find it. I did look at the Event Viewer but I'm not sure if that'll help to find the log.

Should We just go and buy a new computer?

Check Folder Options in Control Panel and make sure you have hidden files and folders unhidden then search again for it.

Buy a new computer when a driver update or a replacement graphics card might be all that's needed? Your money - your choice.

It shows that the folders are not hidden. I searched for the following but nothing came up. I'm not sure what to do next.

    \Temp\WER6a9d.dir00\Min 081113 - 01.dmp

Set Windows to create minidumps: http://www.carrona.org/setmini.html when a new crash happens, the dump file should be saved in the location below.

You could check if there are any *.dmp files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder, if there are, copy them to your Desktop, zip them and attach the zip here.

I found the two minidump files but when I went to open them I received this message:

Adobe Reader could not open mini081113-01.dmp because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged. (For example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

I also received the same message with the mini081313-01.dmp file. I never touched the dump files so I'm not sure what happened to them and in opening the file, it recommended using Adobe Reader to see them.

I also checked the start up and recovery settings and it was already set up exactly like they wanted it to be.

Thank you for all of your help. Do I now wait and see if it happens again? I'm sure that it will. I really don't want to go and buy another computer.....yet.

I just went back and changed the minidump file from opening it with Adobe Reader to Word Pad and got a bunch of jumbled info listed. Do you know what I mean? I'm not sure if I can click on something to show something that makes any sense if I post the info?

I've never had this situation so I'm not sure if I can still post the info in another way. I feel like it's right there in front of me!

I'll see what you think and go from there.

Just copy the 2 dump files to your Desktop then right-click them and select Send to > Compressed folder. Then attach the resulting zip file to a reply here.
