Hello. I am having problems with one of my computers; it's a 32-bit Dell Vostro 1500, 1.4 GHz processor with 2 MB RAM. And, I'm running XP SP3 on it. I was following the steps in the Malware Removal Guide, and when I got to "Step 2: Installing Tools and Running Scans," I couldn't get past the first step. I double clicked on the RogueKiller icon on my desktop. It started scanning and about ten seconds went by when I got the notorious blue screen. I turned off my computer manually, waited ten seconds and turned it back on. Then, I retried double clicking RogueKiller and the same thing happened resulting in another blue screen. The error message on the Bluescreen reads as follows: "... try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing... Beginning dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

P.S. Checking for any updates has been made difficult because I am also unable to connect to the Internet. (See the networking forum. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=278150 )

P.P.S. By the way, the sound won't play on this computer when I try to play video (mp4) files, but the same files play fine on my other computers.

    What should I do?

I see little point in trying to track down and diagnose a blue screen bugcheck that only occurs during a very specific malware check, especially on XP. Additionally, some of the logs that may be needed to gain insight into the issues(s) have been removed by the tools previously used.

Re the Wireless networking issue with certificates, check that the System date/time are correct; certificate errors are commonly due to errors there. You may need to buy/fit a new battery on the motherboard and reset the time/date in the BIOS.

Do you have the Recovery CD/DVDs for the Vostro? If not, you should try to create them, there should be a Start menu entry somewhere to do just that. You'll need them to run many of the repairs that may be needed.

Re the lack of sound, is it restricted to mp4 playback (do the Windows sounds work)? If so, it's likely to be a codec issue, not a Windows problem.

EDIT: ensure that you have uninstalled those old Java software versions as previously instructed. If/when you discover you actually need Java, download JRE from here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html (the link is given on that MG download page > Author: Oracle). Java, especially old insecure versions, is a malware magnet.

I took this computer to campus. They got me online and suggested I run a scan disk. I did and the computer was still bonkers. Rather than buy a new battery, it was easier for me to put Windows7 on it. But now it won't get back online. Well, I'll have to take it back to the Office of Information Technology on campus ...
