im so very proud of my children. my sons school report shows 4'A's, 3'B's, and a 'C'. he has a 3.33 GPA.
it's not all that, until you factor in that not only is he the first non-hawaiian in an hawaiian immersion school, but also that he suffers from writing dyslexia.
we are soon to move, and i have just been told he will likely qualify for early admission to a pre-college marine science program at the university of hilo.
to continue to study both science and hawaiian is a very tall order. the immersion schools teach about the sea, the sky, the land, and the heart. mostly they do not have a good track record with mainland academic benchmarks, SATs, etc.etc. marine science on the other hand is purely academic. to plant your feet in both worlds, to strive to speak for these islands, to understand the concept of 'Aloha' and desire to share it with the world, to have such excitement and purpose to learning, would be an achievement at any age. he is 14.
in addition he has just represented his school at the 'makahiki' (hawaiian games). he has also just won the silver at the state ju jitsu tournament.

my daughter is working as as the OT for the DOE on kawaii. she radiates sunshine. she has a way with disabled children that is nothing short of magical. not only that but she knows how to fight the system, without sustaining injury; how to support and encourage the parents, without compromising her position, and how to integrate what she does with who she is without drowning in the process.

isolated as we are, i often despair of the world. i worry about what we are leaving to our children. but when i look to our children i am filled with encouragement and hope. this next generation is more tolerant, more aware, better educated, well rounded, less greedy, wasteful, and selfish. the world truly is their oyster and they will be its pearls.

Great Post laurieB, and your right to be proud of your children's accomplishments, they are indeed impressive.
