    Dear majorgeeks.com,

    I got a fairly nasty virus through regular browsing the other day(it wasn't even porn! How annoying), blew right through firefox's noscript and adblock, and within a few seconds I had nearly 80 running processes and my antivirus going nuts. Bad luck on a pop-up ad, I guess.

    As soon as I could, I disconnected from the internet, and let MBAM/Avira complete scans while I looked for a reputable place to post hijack this logs, which led me here.

    Unfortunately, Trojan-Spy.Win32.Agent, Sinowal.E were found, and MBAM(1.40, i have 1.41 now) cleaned some other stuff. I've been googling all over the place trying to find fixes before I came here, so I hope that doesn't get in the way of the cleaning procedure.

    I have already overwritten my MBR with the recovery console on my windows XP cd, but i'm unsure if its killed sinowal. Gmer's MBR tool still shows infected code, and I don't know enough about the technical side of this to be sure whether its true or not. I'm a fairly tech savvy user, but when it comes to rootkits, registry editing and other things of that nature, I need help.

    RootRepeal file scan fails to run, and only hangs my system(At Initializing, please wait/scanning for hidden files), even with disk access slider set to high. Possibly a problem with windows explorer, as the rest of the windows interface hangs too. I get mouse control, but that's it. All the other scan options work, and those are in the log, except the Files option.

    Hoping you guys can help me, as I'm out of my depth. Just finished your read and run first and Xp cleaning guide. Logs are attached.

    It looks like the scans you ran on Sept. 10th with MBAM probably took care of most of it.

    Lets do this:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    NetSvc::
    {F81AE513-0AB9-40D6-8316772266E3EC8C}

    File::
    c:\docume~1\Corey\LOCALS~1\Temp\1AC3.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\45235788142C44BE8A4DDDE9A84492E5.TMP

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet002\Services\{F81AE513-0AB9-40D6-8316772266E3EC8C}]
    "ServiceDll"=-

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Awesome, thanks for getting back to me. Combofix did restart my computer, and despite its warning to not run programs until it was over, zonealarm and avira decided to boot up at that time to. I got a firewall alert for a file "pev.cfxxe" going to "68.87.85.102:dns". After a moment to google, i hit allow. If it wasn't part of combofix, please let me know.

    Just to be sure, I did another MBR scan with the GMER tool. Here's the logs you wanted, and to hoping its a false positive.

    Connected the system to the net so I could update combofix before applying your patch. Did another MBAM scan for the heck of it, and, hey, still have problems. Seems its not quite fixed. MBAM found trojan-downloader.cutwail. Either MBAM missed it the first time, or its a fresh infection, and I could have sworn the 'read and run first' guide cleaned temporary files.

    This thread which drew me here in the first place suggests using another tool to deal with the rootkit. Not sure if its needed, but if you want me to run any other diagnostic tools, could you let me know so I can thumbdrive them over to the infected system? Not going to be making the mistake of giving it a network connection again anytime soon.

    TimW, thanks a bunch for your help. I think your combofix script got rid of the last of it, and I did end up cleaning that last detection with MBAM, but I figured it'd be best to get a fresh bunch of scans.

    Rootrepeal still hangs my system, but other than that the system is working great, smooth, boots fine. Still a little concerned there might be a rootkit left, but most of the utilities are saying nothing's left. I'm hoping that's the last of it, but I'd really appreciate it if you could give the logs a once once over and doublecheck. The only worrying thing is the MBR scan, which has been saying that since the infection began.

    And the last two, for other utilities.

    Again, thanks so much for your help.

    It is very likely a false positive, however let's do this:

    Delete the current mbr.log file and then run the below instructions.
    Click Start > Run and copy & paste the following text in the code box into the Run box and then click OK. You must copy and paste or type in this exactly. The quotes must be exactly as shown and there is a space before the -f
    Code:

         "%userprofile%\desktop\mbr.exe" -f

    Now double click on the mbr.exe file and attach the new mbr.log

    Used mbr's -f(ix) function to repair the boot record. Here's the new log. Still the same, it looks like.

    Edit:
    It is in fact, exactly the same log. So much so that the forum is refusing to upload it, because it appears to be a duplicate file.

    Then it is picking up a false positive, which is not unusual. Otherwise, your logs are clean.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
