I've got a computer that I gave away to a friend that is acting up. Corrupted win 98 is what I'm 90% sure of as was the opinion of a very geekie friend.
I want to put another hard drive with win 98 on it so that I can drag some of his important stuff off of the corrupted drive to the other drive.
I've only heard of duel booting but I don't know how could somebody enlighten me please. Thanks

You would need to install a boot manager... like Powerquests Bootmagic for one...(winXP/NT/2000 has one built in) but from what you are describing, you don't need a dual boot...
You could install the new drive as master and the old drive as a slave..
install the OS on the new master drive and then just copy the files over from the old slave drive.....

from dos navigate to the disk drive you do not want to boot from and change win.com to won.cim and it will not boot but you will still have access to all your files.hope this helps

    exeter,
That would work fine for me and thats pretty much how I set it up. However the computer is one I gave to a fellow and he's not comfortable with that. He needs to see what's going on if thats the right way to put it. That's why I wanted to try the duel boot setup. He can find what he needs by sight write down the file name then move it.
Whats boot magic? Is it freeware and would it do what I'm wanting to do?
    kahless,
Not sure what your saying? Do you mean just swap files in the dos mode or is what your saying kind of like the second half of exeters post?

If he is comfortable with hardware and wants to lose nothing:
    1) unplug the old drive (no need to remove)
    2) install your new drive as master on the first IDE channel and get your OS all set up with drivers, etc.
    3) plug your old drive in as slave or master on the next IDE channel.
    4) drag the files over from the old drive and reformat it .

Windows XP handles this easily, 98 is OK 90% of the time. If the boot gets messed, unlug the new drive and boot a floppy. Delete the Windows dir on the old drive.
Often times a hardware solution is more secure than a software one. I always figure five minutes with a screwwdriver is better than half an hour with software.
Dual booting works, but is not all that stable.

Thanks DOA, that sounds like what I'm going to do.
