My friends computer wont boot, when I turn it on it says:
    "1762 configuration change has occured
    162 configuration change has occured."
I was going to just reinstall windows, but I put in the win 98 start up disk, but I get the same message. I did change the startup sequence, to start at the floppy.
    Any help would be appreciated.

From what i can find this may well be a bios problem..You can try setting the Bios by either the jumpers or taking the battery out for 20 minutes or so..

Is this an oldish computer? can you tell us the name of the motherboard if possible..

Yes it is older, its a P3 600mhz from IBM. the mobo is IBM as well. so I take the battery out for 20 min, then will it boot from the floppy?

Funny enough i was reading the problem you had and it was an oldish IBM computer and it was the Bios that was giving the problem you have..Hopefully after you have removed the Bios battery for a bit and replaced it, it should fingers crossed be ok..If this is not the case then you may need to flash the bios to see if it can repair it for you.

Let us know how you got on..

You will first need to find the name of the motherboard and model number before we can go any further..Sorry to hear the battery never fixed it..No guarentee the flash will work, there is a good chance the mobo is useless, but lets not lose hope yet.

to find out the motherboard type and maybe model download This or for better results maybe THIS ONE this is shareware but works fully, you just cannot save the results or print them , but all you need is motherboard make and model, you can use a pen to copy that info. :)

    Good luck..

I believe the motherboard is an IBM model number 11L1574
    I think that is it. Its a P3 600 mhz, 128 ram.
    thanks for your help

If you can't boot to a floppy, or access the bios, then there is no point in getting a bios update.

UNLESS, you can replace the BIOS chip from another old MB that is identical.

In the end, you might as well, spend some money for a new board......etc.....

Dam i never thought of this hmm, the fool is correct it seems that it may well be better for you to change the mobo..
