Windows 8 0xc000014c I guess it may or may not be boot sector virus, but before it happened i was still connected to oovoo, but no websites would load. When I rebooted, It was showing limited access on my main connection, my other laptop connected fine. Next time i rebooted i got the above error. I may have shutdown incorrectly also i was trying to get into safe mode. That does not work. i get the blue screen immediately . This is windows 8. I7 laptop, ASUS

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This is more than likely not an issue for the Malware Forum so I may be sending you to the Software Forum. However let's first see if you can do the below.

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan.

For 32-bit (x86) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For 64-bit (x64) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

Thanks for your reply i will download that stuff for my toolbox. You may be right about this not being a malware issue. before i got your reply I booted to an active@ disk and did a chkdsk /r /f . upon finishing that which took most of the night, it loaded a temporary windows 8 profile , as if mine were damaged. I could find no tools to help me repair a profile and i am now glad I didnt do a "refresh" which would have lost the installed programs, which were there since my win 7 upgrade.

So then i created a new profile which seemed to go well and kept my installed programs - most of them anyway.

Bottom line is this I dont know for sure, but this occurred after a recording session with pro tools, which i am sure does some tricks to keep the tracks in sync whille recording and playing back at the same time. If so, it is just another in a long line of dopey programming bugs in what is supposedly the best recording software. I have found it to be frustrating the way it doesnt play well with other programs. thanks for your help .. I wanted to post the resolution, because it bugs me when people solve their problem and dont post the resolution. Plus we all need more info on problems with windows 8
