sounds like a virus knocked this pc out. Your best bet would be to put another drive in there (temporary), load windows on it and put a virus scanner on it and then scan the OLD drive. Once it's clean, take the temporary drive out and reload windows over top of the current installation. During the installation it will prompt you that c:\windows already exists and it will display a new directory to install windows too (C:\windows.000) . DO NOT INSTALL IT TO THAT DIRECTORY. Remove the ".000" so it reads C:\windows and hit ok. Hit ok again on the error box and let windows install normally. You will probably need the cd key so have it handy for all of this.

You'll have to swap the drives: C for D so that D is the temporary C drive. Then you can install windows to it.

I'm having somewhat of the same problem... I have a computer that went kaput yesterday, but when I put in a different hard drive to get it going again, it says there is no fixed hard drive and won't let me fdisk or format. Can anyone help?

do i need to move the jumpers so that D is (set as C was before)? and when i install 98 onto the new C Drive (previously D) will it erase the info that is already stored on it, like pictures etc? how will i install windows onto the new drive, do i put the cd in the cd drive and boot making sure 1st boot option is cd drive?

Yes, you need to jumper the temporary drive. For the time being I would just disconnect the other drive, so that all that shows up is the drive with the new Windows installation.

    • Disconnect the C:\ drive, and jumper the D:\ drive to Master.
    • When installing Windows to the new drive, DO NOT FORMAT. This way you can still keep the other data on this drive.
    • Load the Antivirus on the new installation as Kodo mentioned and then power down to connect the old drive. This time you want to jumper it to Slave.
    • Power up and run the antivirus scan on the old drive, and then please post the results.

Once you have the results then we can figure out where to go from there :D

thats not working, i just wanna know if theres a way of copying an antivirus program onto a floppy disk.

use WINRAR, you can span across floppies with it. So if a file is 4MB, you can compress it and it will parse it out to 3 different floppy disks. Then you can extract it on the machine using the set of disks. WinRAR must also be installed on the target machine.

scanreg\restore should read scanreg /restore. Note space after scanreg and forward slash / not backward slash \. Also try typing in scanreg /? for help. Note space after scanreg, forward slash and question mark. Bazza

sorted that bit too, scanned and no viruses were found, now im reinstalling windows 98 over windows 98 on the C Drive, which is master, and putting D Drive back as an extra storage drive......

How do i uninstall windows 98 off D Drive? Please help.

Once you put the original drive in the primary position so that it boots and not the temporary install , you need only find the windows directory on the temporary drive and delete it.

I'm glad to see that you've figured quite a bit out on your own.. :)
