 My son's puter has a boot up trojan or virus. They are connected to a wireless router and seem to get hit frequently with them this past 2 weeks. I have been using your foremat to fix them, but must have missed something that went into hiding. It showed everything was okay then this happened.
Now it just keeps rebooting itself. HELP!
*His wife has homework on it and really doesn't want to lose everything.

If you cannot even boot the computer in either safe mode or normal mode, it is difficult for us to help you.

Also, you never even supplied and OS nor did you tell us if there are any error messages. So it's rather hard to try to suggest anything. If WinXP, a system recovery operation (depending on the real problem) may help. You really should be discussing this is in the Software Forum.

Thanks Chaslang.......I unplugged everything except for the necessary stuff to run the puter and it came up long enough for me to do things. Had to come to work, but will finish up tomorrow and send you a highjack file if you want. Thanks again.
*I was thinking it was a hardware issue....so if nothing is in the log file, then I will know for sure! Thanks again! :)

Yes hardware can do this. Post the log per the instructions below. (Install it as requested).

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

After down loading all the spyware tools and running them......I rebooted......now I am back to square one......doing the same thing. Will work on it tomorrow when I have the whole evening and night to do it. I'll get that logfile as soon as I can.

If you have already run all the steps in the READ ME FIRST for this problem, you do not need to do them again. Just post you HJT log per my instructions. That will only take a couple minutes.

Okay, still working on my daughter-in-laws puter.....I had to use GO BACK......I was able to download everything in the Sticky: READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal again.
I ran a scan at Trend Micro and nothing showed up. It wouldn't let me run a scan at Symantec. So I ran a Bitdefender scan and it showed that my Norton Antivirus had a Trojan in it....it didn't say what kind though. Of course since it found it , the trojan made sure I couldn't use anything else. It rebooted and now I am back where I started with it rebooting over and over. It won't let me into safe mode either. Tried to use GOBACK without any luck. Is there anything I can download to a floppy to use on it to fix it? Thanks.... ;)

You still never told us the OS!

Hijackthis will fit on a floppy so you can copy it to the problem PC. Get me a hijackthis log.

Sorry..It is a Windows XP Home Edition.....I am still learning here....you're saying I can boot from the floppy drive and run the floppy disc of HJT and it will give me a logfile? I'm trying not to sound stupid.........just that I didn't know.

No you cannot boot the WinXP system from a floppy. I was hoping that maybe it would boot at some point and you could use a floppy disk with HijackThis on it to get a log.

If the PC is just booting over and over again, you will probably have to discuss this in the Software Forum. It may be necessary to do a Windows repair from your WinXP CD. It could be that your boot.ini file is corrupt. Some of the guys in the software forum would have more time to work this with you.

You're welcome. Once you get the PC to boot, let me know if there are any malware issues you need help fixing.
