Hi, I am pretty new here, but I have a thread going in Malware waiting for a reply. My question here is related to that thread but is a different subject.

Basic Facts: Working PC = laptop w/XP Pro SP3
Bad PC = Gateway Desktop w/XP Media Center Edition SP2

One of the responses I got on my other thread said I may need to create a Bootable CD and gave me four links to check out. I have downloaded the "UBCD4WinV350.exe". I would like to install it on a CD now, but I don't have a clue as to how to do it. I double-clicked the file on my Desktop and it is ready to install it, but it will only install on my hard drive. When I select the CD Drive it says "Invalid Option". I am working from my laptop. This CD is to be used to repair my Desktop PC (which is what the other thread is about). So, do I need to install this on my laptop and then transfer all the files to a CD? Do I need to initialize a blank CD so the Installation program will recognize it? I downloaded this from the MajorGeeks site, but I could not find any installation instructions. I also looked here in Forums and found nothing else in the way of creating a Boot CD other than a link to Bert's site. I looked on Bert's site and it looks like I need either the Installation CDs from the Desktop PC (don't have), or access to the Installation files on the PC itself (have, but can't get to). Will the above .exe install without having the original Installation files from the PC in question?

    Hi 45.

Download and install this program called infrarecorder... http://majorgeeks.com/InfraRecorder_d6206.html

Once its installed, run it and you will see an option called "write image" select that, and navigate to where you have the UBCD saved, and then make sure ther is a CD in the drive and click go.

OK, downloaded and installed. No problem. Opened Infrarecorder and clicked on "Write Image". Small problem, it defaults looking for image files. Selected All Files and found UBCD4WinV350.exe. Made sure new blank CD was in the drive. Clicked Go. Appeared to write to CD but Windows Explorer (File Manager) can't see anything on the CD. Where'd I go wrong?

Sorry mate, once burned you have to put the disc in the cd drive and restart your computer to boot from it.

It does not run inside windows.

    :)

You need to extract the ISO file. Run UBCD4WinV350.exe because it is a self-extracting zip file which contains the image. Use Infrarecorder to burn the image to a CD.

Ok, this sounds reasonable. I'll try this on another CD. Thanks!

OK, just installed on my laptop. It now wants to do its Build. My laptop uses XP Pro SP3. The computer I will use this disc on uses XP MCE SP2. Will I be able to use this disc on my Desktop? Or will the Pro SP3 files conflict with the MCE SP2 files? Or will the CD run totally independent of the HDD and just do its own thing? :confused

    It won't matter.

Thank you all. Did the build with UBCD4Win and it just barely fit on a CD. Thought I would have to re-do it on a DVD, but it finished. 733MB on a 700MB CD!:cool Ran it on the bad computer and it has cleaned up about a hundred items in files and Registry, so far.:-D
