    Hi,

I'm new here so if this is not the correct forum to ask this, please let me know which forum I should post it to.

I have a HP Pavilion xt919 PC, Windows ME which refuses to boot no matter what. When I turn it on, it goes through the motion and stops with an error message: "PCI Network Controller in slot 02, Bus: 01, Device: 09, Function:00"
I've tried a system recovery disk (which I had to pay $40.00 to get), but it will not acknowledge the disk as nothing happens, it just goes to a white screen with the words "safety mode" but I'm unable to do anything there. The PC just freezes. I've changed the boot order in the Bios to CD-Rom, so that's not the problem. The technical support people at HP are totally useless as they keep telling me to use the system recovery disk and I've already told them several times it does not work. Any help you can give me will be totally appreciated. Thank You

    Hi and Welcome

Is the network card in the PC an add-on you have just added or did it come with the PC?

Have you installed any new hardware just before this happened?

Just thinking at this moment that its either a resource conflict with the PCI Network card and another, so if possible move the PCI Network card to another PCI slot on the motherboard or remove the card and push back in as it could possible have come loose in slot, especially if cable had been tugged or tripped over or PC moved.

Also try if possibe can you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at startup).

    Hi,

Thanks for your response. I haven't done anything to the PC. It was working fine one day and then this happened the next day. The PC has the original PCI. I did try what you suggested, removing it and reseating it and I started the PC again and it has the same error; does not boot even in safe mode.I even removed the PCI card and started the PC, but it still has the same message. If you press F2 and choose safe mode from the menu, it'll just show you a white screen with the words safe mode but it will not boot, it just freezes there with no active buttons even showing. I'm posting this using my friend's computer. I really can't afford another computer right now and I was hoping to be able to at least get it going even if I had to lose all my files.

    Thanks for your reply, though.

    Yes welcome.

Just remove the card altogether for the time being, until you have got your Windows back up and running.
You can always add it back in later.

You will also need more than just a Windows CD, especially for Me. Most of the hardware in the pc will need drivers, these come on a separate disk from Windows. Windows comes with enough stuff to boot the pc but can't have drivers for eveything so these are loaded after Windows installs.

Also disconnect everthing (printer, usb stuff, scanner...) until after reinstallation. Just have keyboard, mouse and screen. You will need the round plug type of connector for the keyboard and mouse, USB varieties will not work for reinstallation.

Do the first few things that dlb recommends here

Take the card out, then at boot up, go into the BIOS and look for plug n play and change it to the opposite of what it now says and see if you can boot into windows or safe mode.

Thank you very much, everybody. Sorry, I didn't respond sooner, but I have to wait to use my friend's PC as I still can't boot mine. I did remove the expansion card and the error message went away but I still can't boot. I do not receive any error message now. I tried to use the system recovery disk, but it does not acknowledge it even though I have changed the boot order in the BIOS to CD-Rom. I also downloaded some program called Killdisk through my friends computer but my PC doesn't do anything when it boots with this in the CD-Rom drive, just starts to a white screen. It may be I didn't do it right because I really didn't understand how to go about this. My friend has Nero 6 Burning Rom so I burned it using that. The instructions are not really that clear to me. If someone can take me step by step on how to do a boot disk including the file I"m supposed to burn to CD, I will appreciate it.

Thanks again to everyone who have responded.

Killdisk will completely erase your hd. You will lose everything. I do not think you want to do this yet.

There are other things to try: replacing the CMOS battery, testing the RAM, seeing if the hd is good, seeing if a live linux CD will boot and if you can see your files from it and probably a few more things to try before wiping the hd.
