BOOTMGR is missing

I had a friend of mine give me his computer. It is an Pavillion dv9205us. It had windows vista on it. He gave it to me because it wouldnt show video. I fixed this problem and now I've purchased a new hardrive and want to reinstall windows vista on it. It keeps coming up saying BOOTMGR is missing. When I press F9 to change boot order only one boot option is available: the hardrive. So the Dvd rom is not showing up in BIOS. I have 3 other working DVD roms that I have tried. I know it is probably something HP has done to make things difficult so hopefully some expert here has had the same problem and can share with me the secret?

Does the boot order show anything at all other than the hard drive, such as PXE (NIC) boot or USB?

Have you checked in the BIOS options to see if the CD/DVD is enabled to be booted from? This should be accessible via F12 on an HP system if I recall correctly.

 

I'm not sure what the keypress is to get into setup on an HP (collinsl says it's F12), (on a Dell, it's F2), but get into setup in BIOS and make sure to enable the CD or DVD drive and set it ahead of the HDD in the boot sequence.

 

yes i have changed the boot order however when you hit f9 on start up the only boot option that shows up is the hardrive.
