I just get a message that says BOOTMGR is missing..

running windows 7 on an HP laptop
    64-bit
there is a splashtop desktop installed, been there a while though, came with the machine, but finally got that disabled.

Don't have any system discs for windows
But downloaded a windows 7 recovery disc to a thumb drive to see if that would help, but when I booted from the thumb drive I just got a "no operating system detected" message or something similar.
Then I burned the recovery disc to an actually CD but have not had any luck trying to boot from said CD.

Any help would be appreciated, any questions just ask.

Let's stick with the CD for now as they are more reliable as boot media.

Did you burn the disc as an image file rather than plain data? Will the disc boot in another computer? Trying to determine if it is the disc that is bootable.

yes I did burn the disc as an image file rather than plain data, yes it boots in another computer.

Have you checked the boot order in BIOS. Not sure of the key to hit during the HP screen but it should be F1, F2 or F10.

Might also try F12 to see if you get a one time boot menu where you can select Boot from CD.

Yes I have tried to boot from CD as well as resetting BIOS to original settings

I'm not sure why you can't boot to a CD or USB. Bootmgr is missing error wouldn't effect that ability since boot device is selected before that file is loaded.

Does F8 give you a Windows Advanced startup page where you can select Repair your Computer? That would give you the option of using the same Windows Startup Repair.

Which model HP is it? I'll take a quick look at the manual to see if there is anyway to force boot from CD.

The only option I get is esc on the hp boot screen and pressing that only gives options for BIOS. I think somehow the OS is not being recognized. I may have to locate a windows 7 disc.

I'm thinking the recovery disc doesn't transfer to USB well.

The F8 would be the normal Windows safe mode options so you would want to hit it at the end of the HP splash screen just as Windows begins. Or just repeatedly during the splash screen, BIOS will ignore it and Windows will recognize it as it begins.

I'll take a look at your manual. You really should have no problem booting from CD if your CD/DVDROM works.

We have to figure out how to get something to boot.

Ok. Right now all I'm getting is the esc option that leads to BIOS, no F-anything.

I'm still going to look at the manual although the first one I read assumes the computer will automatically boot from CD. If you go into Setup/BIOS is your boot order listed with the CDROM before the HD in the order?

    ****
What I meant about F8 was just hit during the HP screen even though it isn't listed as an option. Don't hit ESC just hit f8 repeatedly to see if you get a different screen then bootmgr is missing.

As far as I can tell that model has CD listed before HD by default. All I can figure is it doesn't like that CD. All I can suggest is to burn a new copy of the CD. Maybe use imgburn as the burning program with the Burn Image File to Disc option. See if you have better luck.

Since you have a USB flash available, you could use Live Linux Creator to download and put Parted Magic on the flash drive. We could see if bootmgr does exist on your Windows partition and use Gparted to make sure the Windows partition is set active. If it exists and the partition is set active then I think it would be a corruption issue. I'm not sure that can be fixed using Linux but I haven't looked.

How did you resolve it--were you able to boot from CD or did you use something other than the Win7 RE CD?

Your fix might help someone else. :)
