Boots up to white screen

I am trying to resurrect a pc that has been out of commission for a while. This pc would boot up to Windows and then switch to an all-white screen. You could not do ctrl-alt-delete or anything. When you press the power button, then you can see the entire desktop before it continued the shut-down process, but there was no way to stop it from shutting down. The pc would boot into safe mode ok. In safe mode, I tried everything I could find from others online: uninstalling video card driver, turning off most start-up applications from msconfig.

In safe mode, I ended up running MalwareBytes and this fixed something, because I was able to boot normally with no white screen. I ran through the Read-&-Run-Me-First and some of the processed did find threats.

Would someone mind looking at the logs attached to see if there are any lingering problems that need disinfecting? The pc does seem to run extremely slow still. Not sure if thats another issue.

    Thanks,
    John

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [SHELL][Rans.Gendarm] HKCU\[...]\Winlogon : shell (explorer.exe,C:\Documents and Settings\JB\Application Data\msconfig.dat) -> FOUND
      [SHELL][Rans.Gendarm] HKUS\S-1-5-21-1078081533-746137067-725345543-1003[...]\Winlogon : shell (explorer.exe,C:\Documents and Settings\JB\Application Data\msconfig.dat) -> FOUND
Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Now run Hitman and have it fix the item it reported.

Reboot and rescan with RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Tell me how things are running now.

    Thanks for the quick response!

I followed your instructions and have attached the RogueKiller logs, which are named RKreport[3].txt and RKreport[4].txt.

Things do seem to be much better now. For instance, before, navigating through the forum was painful as the pc kept hanging up with the hourglass over the pointer, even when just trying to scroll down through the page. Now, after doing what you instructed, I am not experiencing those hang-ups.

Thanks so much for your help.

If things are ok, I think I should probably create a restore point now.... and find a decent antivirus program for this pc. Are there any free one's that are sufficient or should I invest some $?

    Thanks,
    John

    You didn't attach anything.

Also, please run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    And attach the new C:\MGLogs.zip.

I sure didn't attach anything. Sorry about that!

I have run the MGTools scan and attached are the files I forgot to attach before and the new MGTools log.

    Thanks,
    John

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\JB\Application Data\AntiVirus Plus

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link
Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0
