Botched uninstall

Hello,
I'm using Windows XP SP3.
I just tried to install the new AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 (Free edition) over the old version-AVG 7.5. It said it would automatically uninstall AVG 7.5 during the install... but then it hung up for a long time (1/2 hour). So I end task and restart and try again, but no luck.
I tried manually uninstalling AVG 7.5 first, and I deleted the AVG folder in Program Files. Then I ran the AVG 8 setup again, but it keeps getting hung up. It says during install:

file_AVG7_avg7rsxp.sys: stopping service...

And won't get past that.
Any thoughts? It seems like some part of AVG 7.5 is still lingering.
I've installed AVG 8 on two other computers with success. (One of them did not have another version of AVG beforehand; the other one had AVG 7.5, which I manually uninstalled first.)

As you have deleted some of the files already you may have to reinstall 7.5 then uninstall.
First stop it from starting with computer you can use this useful tool

Reboot then uninstall

 

Okay, I disabled AVG from startup, restarted, then tried reinstalling AVG 7.5, and it didn't work.
I then tried uninstalling both 7.5 and 8.0, with no success.
It doesn't want to install or uninstall either programs fully.
Is there any way to manually remove the remnants?

I ran Revo Uninstaller, and it seems to have worked for AVG 7.5, but AVG 8 still crashes. Revo works by first running a program's built-in uninstaller, then wiping out extra parts afterwards; the AVG8 uninstaller always crashes. Dang!
Is there a way to remove AVG8 manually?
