BR drive + VGA non-HD monitor?

I have an ASUS Blu-Ray drive in my PC, which uses a Dell E197FP monitor. My videocard (GF GTX 560 Ti) has DVI inputs but the monitor is VGA-only, so there's a DVI-to-VGA adpater where the monitor cable plugs into the card.The BR drive plays DVDs just fine, but I get this error message in PowerDVD when trying to play BR discs: "This content is only allowed on a digital output. Ensure your display device uses a DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort connector."

So it sounds like it wants only DVI connections. But given that I have to use a VGA connector to be able to use the monitor, what are my options for getting BR discs to play? Is there some other additional converter that I can attached inbetween the videocard and the monitor's VGA cable that will allow BRs to play? Or am I out of luck?

(I know "why bother playing BRs if you don't have an HD monitor?" is a valid question; it's not that I care about HD, but I only have some movies on BR and would like to play them regardless.)

I can't answer the adapter questions - I'm sure others will jump in shortly.

Have you tried some software other than PowerDVD to make sure this is not a software anomaly? You might consider browsing the Cyberlink forums for any similarities with your symptoms.

 

Unfortunately, no-go... Tried a few more demo/trial players with no luck, and a bit more searching seems to indicate that VGA can't play BR at all. Guess it's time for a new monitor.

 

Ah, sorry. Oh well - a new monitor is a good thing.

BluRay playback requires a HDCP compliant display, so make sure any monitor you purchase is so.
