Brand new DVD-Rom not working

I just bought a brand new AOpen DVD-Rom not top of the line or anything like that. I put it in my machine and it works with CDs not with DVDs, the thing is that it shows in "My Computer" that it is in fact a DVD-Rom and if I place a DVD movie into it, the drive shows the name of the movie. It doesn't recognize fresh unburnt DVDs. I just don't understand.

I did do some research and found out that CD and DVD burning software can cause a DVD-Rom problems so I first uninstalled a bunch of programs then I just reformatted to no avail, I had Alchohol 120% and a few burning programs.

Anyway, any information would be appreciated.

    Thx

The only dvds I have that aren't movies are unburnt. The drive doesn't recognize them either.

I'm a bit confused here. You can watch movies? The drive doesn't recognize blank or 'unburnt' DVD's? If it's a DVDROM, it won't do anything with blank DVD's. Only a DVDRW will recognize blank unburnt DVD's in order to try to record to them. A DVDROM will only recognize DVD's with some type of info on them: data, music, movies, photo's, etc....

Sorry, I guess I never really started calling each drive by it's capabilities ie. dvd-rom, dvd-rw, dvd-r... whatever. This has all the bells and whistles. It's a dvd burner/re-writer/dvd-rom/dvd-ram and more drive. Yet all it is capable of doing is reading cds. When I put a dvd movie in it shows the name of the movie in "My Computer" and sometimes I get a "auto play" loading bar which never goes anywhere. I try using Powerdvd to open the dvds as well as WMP and DivX player. Nothing. When I put in a unwritten DVD-R into the burner it doesn't recognise it as anything in fact is says there is no disk in there. And it also thinks that dvd movies are empty disks waiting for files to be copied to.

If there's anything else that I haven't mentioned, let me know. I'll be sure to post it.

    Thx

Oh it's an AOpen Triple Format DVD Rewriter model: DSW1812P-470

It sounds like you may have purchased a brand new 'lemon'. You might be able to fix it by flashing the firmware with the latest version from AOpen, but if it's new you shouldn't have to. I hope you kept the receipt! Return it to the place of purchase for a replacement. Now, if the replacement drive does the same thing (acting all wierd), then you may have some serious PC problems, but I'm pretty sure the DVDRW drive was bad. I've seen brand new drives right out of the box not work, so your situation isn't all that rare. GOOD LUCK!

Alcohol 120- In cd, Nero, and several cd/dvd writing programs have caused this - ther are so many people with this problem.
Microsft had various fixes, and I churned around for others.
I tmay be the new drive, but I would not be surprised if it is a burning program fault.
Apparently they mess up the upper and lower filters, in the syatem.
You can try a repair installation, which will save your data.
I managed to find a friends pc, that I was asked to fix, and although I tried all the fixes, I finished up saving the data to a seperate partition, and formatted the drive, and reinstalled -it was quicker.
I can post as many of these fixes, again, for your perusal.

If you have not got a seperate partition to save you valued pictures/ data, then, see if you can save them online, and when it is formatted, all will work-

Thank you for your replies, I think that I will just take the unit back and get a different brand name, I haven't heard anything about AOpen, but judging from their website and the lack of ease that it has I am going to say that it's not that good of company (prove me wrong, please).

I have reformatted already whiping out any sort of software that might have interfered.

    Thank you for your help.

Try it in another drive/ computer , if you can.
The problems with alcohol 120/ in cd etc: are hard to remove - only a full fprmat seems to sort it out -
You may buy another, and find the same problem.
Unless the place you purchased it from can run it on a pc to check it, 10 to 1, its a software problem.
I spent hours, trying different fixes, so I know it needs to be cleaned right off, fully formatted - I even did the mbr, to be sure, and the dvd worked then.
