Hi, I've experienced almost identical issues to Brewticus with the persistent braviax and winreanimator. I picked them up yesterday on a soft drink company site. I can't run combofix, spybot, superantispyware or vundofix.

I've followed the Brewticus instructions as far as they seem generic. I've run MGtools and findawf and attach the files.

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

See if you can't run ComboFix now.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

Hi TimW and thanks a million for your help.

I followed your instructions and they appear to have been substantially successful. Thanks very much indeed.
I attach the Avenger file, Combofix file and MGlogs zip, too.

All the external signs and activities of braviax have gone but I do have a couple of Zone Alarm problems which didn't exist before being invaded. I thought I'd disabled Zone Alarm when carrying out your removal process but perhaps I didn't in some way.

First, Windows is not recognizing when the Zone Alarm firewall is in place.
Secondly, the junk mail filtering with Outlook Express is not working and is turned off in Zone Alarm. When I try to turn it on I get the message: "Encountered an error communicating with the Junk Email Filter agent"

When I try to reinstall Zone Alarm from scratch. I get the message: "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrator's account." I am the only person who uses the machine so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks again for your help which has ensured that I sleep properly tonight. I look forward to your further comments.
    Chris

    Hi again,

I may have spoken a bit too soon. Zone Alarm just completed a scan and gave me this result:

    Active item: not-a-virus:FraudTool.Win32.Reanimator.a

    Path: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{201F9937-E82F-47CC-A6DD-3D3DA1167247}\RP1286\A0208052.exe

It has been quarantined and Zone Alarm tells me it's safe. Do you agree?

I don't know where it could have come from.

    Thanks

    Chris

It's in your system restore files .....we will deal with that in a moment.

Click on Avenger ...in the window that opens copy and paste this into the box:
Now click on execute. If may ask to restart your computer...allow it.

That should take care of the rest of the problems. While you are doing that, here are the final cleanup items:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi,

A bit more info on the Reanimator issue. It seems to come alive - or un-quarantine itself - every now and then because Zone Alarm keeps reporting the same item as in the previous post.

I have scanned the System Volume Information folder and it contains 12 items identified as "not-a-virus:FraudTool.Win32". 3 are UltimateDefender sys files, 8 are Reanimator.a exe files and one is Reanimator.b exe with the same path name except for the sequence beginning RP.

Is there any way to remove this folder?

    Thanks

    Chris

    Hi,

I followed the instructions and ran a scan on the System Volume Information file and it was clear of any hostile items.

However, I'm still having the same problems with Zone Alarm which I assume have to do with settings that have been changed during this infestation.

Just to repeat the problems, the junk mail filtering with Outlook Express is not working and is turned off in Zone Alarm. When I try to turn it on I get the message: "Encountered an error communicating with the Junk Email Filter agent" and it stays turned off.

I carried out an uninstall and fresh install. The uninstall didn't seem clean and at 80 percent of the way back through the install I get the message: "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrator's account."

I am the only person who uses the machine so that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to your comments.

Try uninstalling in safe mode ..and use the CCleaner tools if necc ....then remove the left over reg files also with CCleaner (make the backup first). Then reboot into normal mode and reinstall Zone Alarm ..see if that works.
