Heres something thats been bugging me for some reason. can anybody shed some light on why brett favre last name is pronounced farve? kinda stupid question, but its one of those words in which the pronunciation doesnt make sense unless it has been miss pronounced for a long time. If it is supposed to sound like 'far' and the V is silent, then its just a silent V which is acceptable. but if its actually pronounced 'farv', there are no silent letters but the E, and the R and V have been switched around somewhere down the line. stupid question or a long time miss pronunciation? anyone?:confused

It is simple really, at some time he decided to pronounce it the French way.

No what they do is reverse the V and the R Le Harvra (phonetic)
For some reason the V sound arv and then the RE is pronounced RA

Except the French would call that "doobla vay" (phonetically) meaning double V because they see it as two V's not two U's ;)

Re: The 'W' - That's because the traditional Roman alphabet, (which our language is based), did not contain the letters, j, u, or w., (i.e. had only 23 letters). Thus, ‘W’ should actually be VV,

It's Favre...and he's a magic man. So glad he is playing this year. I was hoping for him to come back and make the NFL exciting this year. My husband is sick of all the Favre news...not me ;)

Hehe, here's a mouldy oldie thread.;) Nah, I'd rather see him retire on top than be kicked out. The poor guy doesn't seem to have any retirement options in place, shades of Bobby Hull, fading away into the distance...

One of the most overrated QB's in the history of football. Compared to the greats like Aikman, Montana, Marino, etc, he's just a man who cannot let go of the game.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I hate him, with a passion...

I'm a Green Bay man - always was, always will be...

I loved Favre when he was a Packer - one of the greats...

Now I hate him - he's the enemy, in our own division...

I can't wait to see AJ Hawk plant him into the ground...

You know, when he was playing, I respected him. I didn't like him, but that's a personal and/or rivalry thing. But now...he has become a caricature of himself. Late night comedian fodder. He has even done television commercials making fun of his inability to make a decision and stick with it. I just wish he would go away, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with his ability to play football any more.

It's like the FIFTH time I did a Cher "farewell" tour. Either do it or don't, but quit dragging everyone through the BS. Especially how this one happened. They seriously sent three of his teammates to his house INSTEAD of practice to "talk him into coming back". rolleyes Should've just left him alone.

    What?? Brett Favre retire?!

Only until the end of training camp! :-D

I have a 6 yr. old grandson, i suspect one day he and HIS son will be watching the Great One.

The record Brett is really going for is to play for EVERY team in the league!

The bus will pick him up from the Senior Home, won't need no stinkin' mouth guard, only necessary if you have any teeth. With his grey beard down to his chest, it'll look like Santa is the QB in the Dec. games!

I'm a Wisconsin boy, and we have a LOT of great memories of this fella, he put the Pizazz back in the Packers! I have no animosity towards him or his decision to move on, even to the hapless vikings. But he could have retired in Glory, hell, I think they may have renamed the city after him. Instead he has chosen the path of Michael Jordan, et. al.

But I sure that when he finally does retire for real, Green Bay will still have him back for a rousing half-time number retirement ceremony. Problem is, I'd like to see it. I'm 58 and I hope this happens in my life-time yet. ;)
