I believe the official name is Lion Rampant, or Rampant Lion. Been doing a search on it, so far can neither confirm or deny, but it does seem likely. It is a major logo (and ancient) for the royalty of England.

i knew it has been used in british royalty, but since i'm neither british nor royalty, i didn't know if it had an official name.

If you do a search on the two names I've suggested you'll see a lot more examples, that pretty well match the picture shown.

That Wikipedia link was interesting reading...and not meaning to get off topic here, but...does anyone know of a website that finds your coat of arms to your last name...one that preferably returns a good quality picture!?!?

The pub sign is a lion rampant. For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaumont_Herald_Extraordinary

When I was at King's College, University of London (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/) we had a red lion mascot, which was called or nicknamed Reggie (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/alumni/about/history.html).

There are lions at Nelson's column in Trafalgar square: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson's_Column

"The lions at the foot of the monument actually have dog paws instead of lion (feline) paws as the creator, Sir Edwin Landseer, had never seen a lion."
