Broadband Speeds

So, what are the speeds of everyone's connections?

Seeing how it seems like many parts of the country are constantly upgrading bandwidth, it seems reasonable to post another one of these threads.

 

HAHAH.....good joke.....still plodding along with dial-up here. Oh well....something to look forward to when I get the new machine

 

Qwest upped their service to up to 7Mbps here, which in turn caused Cox to upgrade their service to 9Mbps.

I don't remember where anymore, but Cox upgraded one of their networks to 15Mbps!

 

Still just 3Mbps through Charter cable.

Though it is 0Mbps right now, until the cable is restored here. They offer a "back up" dial up connection, but I didn't even put a dial up modem in this computer.

 

I just re-read that and it makes me sound like a liar or crazy... how could I be typing this if I don't have any connection. I am at work and it is a slow day

I hear ya brother,It took me 8 weeks"shoulda been 2" to get my 1/2 meg dsl,my speed was supposed to be increased for free 3 months ago to 1 meg no joy,thats two line changes and still I'm only at at 2mb if I cough up extra dough,also I'v recently found out the fastest I'm ever going to get broadband in the next couple of years is 2meg,even if I switch to the fastest we have apart from satellite,bulldog which everyone else will get at 4meg of course for the same price

I hear ya Halo. I was quite shocked when I first came to the US several years ago and saw how advanced www thinking was in everyday life, and yet the UK didn;t seem to know what is was for still. Sad really....

Which, I know its alot, but I paid 50 a month for 1.5/1.5 wireless service not all that long ago.

 

thats not alot at all,about 35-40£,I'd pay that for 9meg download speeds and I'd tip

I,m in the UK and as Halo has pointed out we are a bit behind in the speed department.

I am on a 2.2MB connection but i don't hit it. My Upload speed is max 264k no matter what.

Yeah, speakeasy has a ton of bandwidth.

 

My son just started at a northeast technical school (i'd rather not say....)
and the other night when I called, his roommate had just downloaded
an 850mb file in one minute and forty one seconds.

 

Still on 56K modem line but DSL modem arrived and SBCYahoo goes live Tuesday.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 33 kbps (4.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 231 kbps (28.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Was paying $42.95/month for 1.5 down, 256K up. Bellsouth just offered free upgrade to 3 meg, which went active this morning. Not quite getting it all.

Yeah, definately not proportionate.

Parts of the country get 15Mbps for what i pay for 9, for what others pay for 5, for what others pay for 1.5.

 

OK. have to ask (although why i don't know lol) whats the difference between kbps and mbps? 'kilo bytes per second vs. mega bytes' no doubt, but how many kilos in a mega?

 

If i'm right 1000 kbps is 1 mbps.
