I hate my slow connection. Dial-up. Should be 56.6 but only works here at 28.8 tops. I am assuming it is from old phone wires and because I am quite a distance from the road.

A friend of mine gave me some info. about a Broadband Co. which I could get.

    www.wildblue.com
I emailed them asking questions, but am getting the runaround on if it would help me or not. They are telling me it will increase my speed, etc.. (of course they will say that)
I guess I want to know opinions of some on here who know about these things and if it would really benefit me to switch?

Sorry if I did not make myself clear. I guess what I want to know, is it going to speed up my internet enough to make it worth the cost.?

The only thing I have ever had is dial-up, though it was much faster where I lived before. I don't know anything about broadband.

PS. Link works for me. Sorry if you are having trouble.

Cannot speak for US ISPs but UK ones have basic line tests that you just enter the phone number you will be using for ADSL ( Broadband ) and that gives a rough idea what max speed you may get, they then can if you push them do a further detailed line test to check your speeds.. they are fairly accurate tho.

What was the max speed they said you will get off your line?

I didnt see a line/phonenumber checker at that site ( which works for me in UK fine ) as I couldnt check as I dont have US phone number, but if it has one enter your number and see what speed it says you will get.

as to worth it, then if you are prepaired and can afford any major increase over 56k or in your case 28k-ish then its worth thinking about.. my personal take would be if you can get near 512k then its worth it.

Oddly enough, they must have gotten sick of my questions, and they directed me to another service in the area.
    www.getdway.com

Neither one has any where to enter my phone number to check speed (at least no where I see)

This one does say an average of 500-600

Guess I'll keep looking and comparing the two.

    Thanks for the replies.

Just incase you didn't catch it...that "getdway.com" that you mentioned in your last post, is SATELLITE internet!!!! I would bet that most likely it will be WAY better than you dial-up!!!! However...It is about as dependable as satellite t.v.!! If it rains hard enough, snows too much, wind blows too hard, etc. (just about any act of nature)...odds are it will temporarily cut out your service, until the weather clears up!!!! And you will MOST DEFINATELY need a dish heater on the actual dish itself, being that you live in the great white north up there!!!! On the other hand...like I said earlier...you will see a significant increase!!

BUT...In my opinion...There ain't no way in hell I would pay those kind of prices for broadband (atleast for the performance they have to offer!!) unless someone came up with something that would download about 5 gig in the time it takes to fart!!!!

Are you out in the boondocks or are you relatively close to civilization?? Reason I ask...I would think that SOMEONE in your area would be offering broadband...whether it would be DSL or Cable, I don't know!!!! I know SBC found here , offers DSL to different areas nationwide!! If you go to the link I pasted...you will see in about the middle of the page where you can enter your phone number and it will tell you if you can get it there!! Another big one for cable broadband is Comcast!! Go here and, again, enter the information and it will tell you what is available in your area!!

Hope that kind of help a little bit!!

BTW if they have gotten sick of your questions, I would consider them not a decent isp as they should be willing to do everything they can to get you as a customer, including answering lots of questions.

Yes, Roger, I am way out in the boonies. Not really, but far enough removed. I know we can't get DSL here, as no lines have been put in yet. They are working on it for the future.
I live 5 miles out of town, so who knows how long it will take to get here,.
Neither Comcast nor SBC are available. All my research so far has shown only the two I have mentioned above. Even the satellite service we have DishNetwork has no internet options.

Coleman, I agree. The thought that went thru my head was, well, he doesn't want my business.
Still checking out the website you gave me, but it doesn't look promising. I see it is for DSL, so won't do me ay good right now, but thanks.

Unfortunately, I would say...in that case...it looks like satellite IS your only option at the time!! I guess if you can afford it, then it would be better than having dial-up!!!! It is only a 15 month contract, so you could always change then if something better than that comes along in the meantime!!!!

My Mom and Dad have the same problem, they live about nine miles from town…..cleaner air, no light pollution, so you can see the stars………..I tried a few small programs to speed her up, and got 33 once for three minuets, most of the time it’s 28, but sometimes even 14………this was three years ago, but they also have a dish, and it would have been 66 dollars more a month extra for internet service…..she didn’t go for it…….she’s retired and has lots of time……….when ever she needs something large downloaded, I do it here in town, I have the 1.5 dsl and can then burn a cd……wobbles

    Sounds like me wobbles.
Have to decide if the think the price is worth it. As Roger pointed out, if it goes out as often as the tv dish does, probably isn't.

I guess this is one of the drawbacks of moving to the country. Just have to spend more time outside I guess;) Would never move back to the city, though.

Do mobile phones work out where you are? If so, you may be able to get a better download speed via your mobile phone. I looked into this when our BT (telco) connection was lost for a few weeks recently. It seems that you can get speeds up a few 100Kbits - nowhere near as fast as DSL but better than dial-up.

Yes, Maxwell, we do have cell phones here, thanks.
I think I have decided to just stay with my dial-up for now.
After weighing the pros and cons of satellite and as much as it would probably go out, as our tv does, it isn't worth the extra money.

Thank you all for your input and advice.
