Broadband??

If my broadband is downstairs on my main computer, but need it to go upstairs into my room on my other computer, what exactly do i need and could you give me some links to cheap things that i would need to buy. Im on a short budgit and i need to buy a computer and get the internet upstairs.

 

You'll either need to get a wireless router and a wireless card for your upstairs computer or run an ethernet cable from your upstairs computer to a router or switch located downstairs. The first option is more practical than the second.

 

Try www.newegg.com for wireless components. All you need is a wireless router and a wireless card for the satellite computer. Look for 802.11g components. Wireless cards are available as a simple USB device or as a PCI card (to be installed internally). The card is less expensive, but the USB reciever is easier to use (and portable if you ever need to temporarily connect another PC to your home network). To make it easy, you might look at www.walmart.com to see what components they sell. They will have componenets that are simple to setup and use.

 

If i get a wireless router, will i need a certain card to go with it or any card?

 

It's my undrerstanding that you do not need to match brand names, but you should be mindful of the wireless specification. I think 802.11b and 802.11g are the most commonly used. I would prefer 802.11g as it is compatible with most all previous specifications.
