Help needed. I dropped my external hard drive since then it makes a clicking sound and doesn't mount, yet on some occassions it's recognised in the system profiler (OSX). Getting a lot of differing views on what can be done - the quotes I have for data recovery are mmm.. expensive to say the least - any alternatives?

The clicking noise is not a good thing. First off, leave the drive disconnected until you decide what to do. You need to decide if you want to try to recover the data yourself, there are a bunch of free programs, or if you want to send it off and pay someone to attempt data recovery. How important is the data is the question you have to ask yourself.

I just noticed you are running OSX, so beyond my advice not to use the drive is about all I can tell you. I did a Google, and I got some stuff that might help you, but you have probably seen it. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...esult&cd=1&q=os+x+disk+drive+recovery&spell=1

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.
