Broken screen diagnostics

I have a dell xps m1530 that my wonderful daughter dropped. The screen just does not work. It has vert lines but mostly black. I can still adjust the brightness of the screen but it does not display. I booted up in safe mode and used an external monitor to unload the driver for the LCD so now I can boot straight to an external monitor and everything else seems to work. Since I can adjust the brightness of the screen is it safe to assume that the inverter and backlights work just fine and the graphics card is ok. So all I will need to replace is the screen? Thanks for any input.

I hope not but I will address those items if they present themselves. So far everything is working fine w/ the external monitor. I just do not want to replace more than needed so I think I will start w/ the monitor since the backlight seems to working fine and if the backlight is working that means the inverter is working. I was just hoping to confirm my logic.

Have you taken a look inside? With care and the correct documents, try pulling any easy covers and visually inspect any connections and mechanical stress points.
If the foundation looks solid, then a replacement display might be a good next step, especially since you've verified the normal functions.

 

Thanks. I have opened it up and checked all connections. I found the dell service manual. Mechanically, I do not see any visible damage to the screen or mounting. So I think i will order a new screen and go from there. thank you
