Approx. two days ago I started having problems with my broadband connection (sometimes wouldn't connect, sometimes I would get an error message saying there was an ip address conflict with another machine on the network (I only have one computer!)). Then Internet Explorer started crashing. It will never start up first time, keeps freezing and redirects to various pages of its own accord.

I left one of the scans running and when it finished I went to open the IE again, and clicked 'restore last browsing session'. It opened up numerous pages, as if someone had been sitting at my computer using the internet, but no one had. I'm worried someone has been using it remotely.

I have followed the entire guide and cleaning procedure and have attached all of the logs (I will attach the last one to a seperate message).

    Thanks in advance,

    Sarah

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It looks like the cleaning procedure has removed your malware. Are you still really having problems? If so, stop using Vuze, SoulSeek and similar programs which are opening you up for many many problems. That may be where you infection even came from.

Also if still having a problem, are you using a wireless router and is it encrypted and password protected?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I am still having problems with IE being hijacked and redirected all of the time. It also keeps crashing every few minutes.

I am using a wireless router, using WEP encryption and a password, is that what you mean?

    Thanks,

    Sarah

Computer crashes or IE crashes? Give us exact word for word error messages. This may not be malware.

Yes! Are you still getting any messages about "ip address conflict with another machine on the network"?

To where are you redirected and does this also happen when you use FireFox and have IE closed? Does it happen in safe boot mode ( you may need to use a wired connection to test in safe boot mode)?

Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    • It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    • Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    • Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    • Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
You have a possible MBR infection. We will need to boot to the Recovery Console ( you installed it while you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection.

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

After running the fixmbr command and boot back to normal mode, continue with the below.

Download the current version of combofix.exe and save it to your Desktop to use in the below procedure.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {CF40ACC5-E1BB-4AFF-AC72-04C2F616BCA7} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now let's flush the Java Cache
    • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
    • Double click the Java icon (be patient, it may take a while to open)
    • Now click the General tab and under the Temporary Internet File area
    • Click the Settings button and then click the Delete Files... button.
    • In the next popup click OK.
If you have multiple Java plugin icons in Control Panel follow the above to clear all their caches.

Now let's flush the FireFox Cache

    To flush your FireFox Cache:
    • click Tools
    • select Options
    • select Privacy
    • in the section labeled Private Data click Clear Now
Now let's flush the Internet Explorer Cache

To flush your Internet Explorer Cache:
    • click Tools
    • Internet Options
    • Now on the General tab and click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too
    • Click OK.
    • When it finishes Click OK.
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
