    Hi there Major Geeks forum.

Ok to start off, when I would type in search requests into Google, it would give me the results and then sometimes say 60/40 it was redirect to a attack site or say I had a virus and start downloading something before I would click it away.

So i tried your "Read me and Run Me First" tutorial on how to remove your malware. I completed every step and I have the logs.
I thought it was fixed because it didn't do it for say a good 30 minutes, but now it has come back.

    I am running:

    Microsoft Windows Xp
    Home Edition
    Version 2002
    Service pack 3

    Computer: Intel(R)
    Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHZ
    2.79GHz, 504 MB of Ram

I have also uploaded the logs from all the programmes requested.
Im not sure what else you may need, but will get the information you want promptly.
    Thanks :cool

    1. You really ought to be using Internet Explorer 8, or at least IE7!

    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512)

    2. Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall the below outdated version of java:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 15

    3. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    4. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)

    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      c:\windows\system32\drivers\uwqjp.sys
    • At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
    • Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Then do the same for the below file and also let me know the results:

    5. What is the below file for?

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\usfpcf.bat

    6. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SET7C.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SET81.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SET9.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SETA.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SET91.tmp
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\SETB.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\95n77.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\chj6C.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\rr427.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\x9r75.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\temp\xpc39.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\karplayer.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\76b1.mht
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\75470.mht
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\344244220
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TmpA21465265
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TmpA21474531
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TmpA21503484

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    7. Also delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    8. Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    9. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. Also answer my question about the batch file. (step #5)

    10. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Hi there Kestrel13, thanks for that. I did all the steps you outlined.

<< Could not find this file at all, manually searched and use the computer search function.

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/scanr...de50/7b8cb0a8260693f451acecdb2a3933035a355462

I have no clue as to what that is.

Ask asked, i have uploaded the mgtools.zip and the combofix.txt

My browser still redirects, not every time, just at random times.

    okay, let's do the below:

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    frntk

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\uwqjp.sys
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\usfpcf.bat

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

What happens if you use a different browser? Could you download Firefox? and see if the occasional redirects occur there too?

I do not reccommend you using software such as the below:

    • Cheat Engine

Many games have anti cheat measures in place and you could end up having your account(s) banned.

Make sure you download Firefox and let me know how that browser behaves. The version of IE that you are using is WAY out of date anyway so you are going to be more vulnerable surfing using IE6!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

It's been a while since your last response so things will have changed somewhat. Let's do this:

    1. Tidy up your desktop please. This is a great place for malware to hide.

    2. Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    3. Now go back to the READ ME to download the latest version of and run Combofix as per the instructions. Attach the C:\combofix.txt into your next reply.

    4. Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    5. Run the new MGTools.exe and attach the C:\Mglogs.zip into your next reply as well as the log from avenger and combofix.

    Thanks
    Kes13!

Getting there... now to deal with a file we have to replace and get back into your system32 directory:

    1. We need to use ComboFix
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\cache\ctfmon.exe | C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

    2. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    3. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now! :)

As far as I can see, your logs are clean. You can follow the final steps which I will post below:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Hi there, I have noticed that in Firefox it has started re-directing again. It does not do this in internet explorer however. This is the browser that originally i was using that was redirecting websites. Should I just un-install firefox....?

  14. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Yes, back up all your bookmarks if you need to and see if a reinstallation makes a difference to the redirects. Then try surfing in both normal mode and safe mode. Do the redirects still occur in safemode or not?

If you are still having trouble after uninstallation and reinstallation of firefox then you will have to go thru the READ ME all over again and we will take it from there.
