I recently bought an Internal SATA II expansion card to add another hard drive (my motherboard only has 4 Sata II ports). I placed the card in the PCI-E port and followed the steps provided to get the card running with a singular drive (instead of using Striped or mirrored Raid configurations). Windows found the new hardware and windows update found and installed them. I then formatted the drive to NTFS and tested that it was reading and writing correctly, all seemed to be working fine. After a few hours (not even using the drive in this time) my computer BSOD’d and restarted with:
    Windows failed to Start.

    File: \Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    Status : 0xc0000221
Info: Windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or
    corrupt.
Giving me the option to insert the windows disk and repair the file.
I reboot the machine, it brings up the "Windows failed to start"
screen that gives us the safe mode, last known good, normal etc boot
options, I choose Boot Normally and it boots right up, and has no
    further issues.
A few days later it happens again, with the same error message as before, but this time it won’t get past the “Windows failed to start” page it loops back to the message each time I reboot. Then when I remove the card it starts up fine. I then tested to see if the hard drive was the issue by replacing the Sata II cord to my CD drive with the new hard drive which worked fine for 2 days of being on.
I had a read around to see if I was doing something completely wrong and found that it could be the wrong drivers installed by windows update. So disconnected the internet and used the disk to install the drivers. Which again cause the same BSOD issue.
Have I completely overlooked something or is it a defective card even though it seemed to work fine for a few days?
