so i foolishly opened a file containing spysheriff, and as far as i can tell, i managed to manually remove the program.

however, afterwards, i had a problem with the desktop wallpaper not showing up, and not being able to be set. i fixed that problem, but then i started getting bsod's at random when windows would finish loading. i can now only operate in safe mode. even in safe mode, i'll get random empty web browsers opening up.

ram was good before this happened, i've tried disabling 2ndary cache in the bios & vga mode. no luck.

i've used bart (avast antivirus from boot before loading windows), mcafee, regsupreme, and hijack this to no avail.

here's my stop error that i get when it blue screens:

stop: 0x0000008E, (0xc0000005, 0xf38048b7, 0xf088fa20, 0x00000000), no specific message or driver is mentioned.

any help is appreciated. might end up reformatting, but i'm hoping i can avoid the trouble. thanks in advance!!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I'm not sure of everything you have done or deleted before coming here but you may have delete files or registry keys necessary for your Windows OS.

At this point I would have to recommend you run as much of the below as you can and attach the required logs so we can determine if any malware remains. Since you cannot run in normal boot mode, you may have to do everything including obtaining all logs from safe mode. However even if we remove your malware, you may still have problems if my above assumption is correct.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

hey again, sorry for the delay.

java update didn't work, as i still can't get into normal mode windows without blue screening after about 30 seconds. i was, however, able to get logs from hijack this & shownew/getrunkey in normal mode and save them successfully before crashing.

a couple things i've noticed: the iexplorer.exe that's running (see in hijack this log) is definitely not legitimate. as well, i don't think arm32.dll is of any help either. and i'm not positive, but a running process with the name 'system' with no extension...not a good thing? as well, i noticed that the windows firewall settings are not changeable...errors occur when i try to open the firewall settings. lastly, if i've got a web browser, firefox say, open in safe mode, it will eventually spawn new empty tabs.

also, sorry for the ugly bdscan output. i accidentally saved to html instead of text.

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of arm32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the arm32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of arm32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now (some of these may no longer be found if the uninstalls above worked):

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: arm32reg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\arm32.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\msys9.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\stonedrv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\2241_32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\lvxz.2560.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\tsrv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\tsrv.exe
    c:\windows\unstall.exe

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Also attach a new logs from ShowNew and GetRunKey.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

i feel like such a jerk replying with this: the computer that was infected was my machine at work...and it's in a semi-large public institution. our department was getting calls from somewhere in the US (we're in canada) that was getting port scanning attempts. i was instructed to reformat. i did, however, do most of what you suggested in your last post regarding scans and removal before you posted! although...i was still blue screening the same as before, though the arm32 had been removed. i have a feeling it was a faulty video card driver, as no full driver was installed for some reason, and a similar problem was fixed on the new install by updating video drivers.

thank you a tonne for your help though, as it's much appreciated and now i'll know where to look if i've got crazy troubles again. cheers!
