    Hi guys,

For the last 3 days I've been having random BSOD's at startup on my Vista x86.

the system POSTS fine, it gets to the vista welcome screen then BSOD's.

I've tried system restore, un-installed all new programs since the problem started, cleaned the registry with CCleaner after un-installations.

everything seemed to have been ok, then I re-installed my Avast anti-virus Pro ver. 6, and The BSOD's are back at it again, I really dont want toscrap avast, it's the pro version lol. but that appears to be the only solution.

I'll post the BSOD info, I'm hoping theres an alternative reason or resolution to my problem.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 1
    BCP1: 81C16626
    BCP2: 00000000
    BCP3: 0000FFFE
    BCP4: 00000000
    OS Version: 6_0_6002
    Service Pack: 2_0
    Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini032711-01.dmp
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\temp\WER-218734-0.sysdata.xml
    C:\Users\user1\AppData\Local\temp\WER2FD6.tmp.version.txt

    The actual BSOD itself read:

    APC_Index_Mismatch

    Technical Information:
    ***STOP: 0x00000001 (0x81c16626, 0x00000000, 0x0000FFFE, 0x000000000)

    thanks guys :)

thanks, that helped me figure out what the BSOD's technical aspects are. I worked through all the troubleshooting on that, minus the things that require an OS disc, as I dont have my Vista CD any longer, I blame sticky fingers and not enough supervision, but thats a different story.

I've un-installed and re-installed avast Pro ver. 6. 3 times now.. with teh same results every time. BSOD at windows boot with avast installed, no BSOD with avast uninstalled...

so now back to my original question, is there a way to save my avast PRO? it has been working fine for a while now, but I think the new update is causing my BSOD? or could it be detecting a driver as a virus and not allowing it to enable on boot? could it be that theres something not compatible with Vista, or is it something else? lol

The only other possibility I can think of is the new windows update that came out in the last few days. avast and the windows update are the only 2 things I've re-added to my system when the BSOD's keep happening...

I also hate being on the net like this unprotected, and I dont want to buy a different AV, they aren't cheap lol.

I'll also mention, with avast installed, the computer will boot fine into safe mode, as avast does not enable.. it has something to do with the autorun or startup of avast.. could this be caused by only having 512MB of RAM, and avast requiring more that what is available at startup?

I already have a 2GB kit ordered and on its way, should be here tomorrow if the shipping is good.. so if it could be this, I'll be able to test it.

but I simply do not see why avast is doing this :|

It's probably triggered by older drivers that need updating (often network/firewall card drivers), don't use Windows/MS Update to find new drivers, go to the hardware makers site and get them. Make sure any previously used security software really has been fully uninstalled.

Also check that Vista is fully updated. Once you've ensured all drivers are updated, reinstall Avast! and try to force a BSOD then upload the minidump.

    Well,

I've come to a conclusion, the BSOD's were being triggered EVERY time avast services started on system boot.

I messaged Avast support directly, and they were not much help. They figured it was a Vista x86 compatibility issue, but the were not sure.

rather than waste any more time troubleshooting, or scrapping my avast, I installed windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Avast is installed, updated and running beautifully again...

in case my message is not clear.. avoid Vista like the plague :)

    Thanks for everyones input..

    over and out..
