I have a computer that will not boot Windows XP Home. I only get the BSOD with the following warning:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

    ***STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001090203, 0x82359828, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

How do you do this if you can not get past the BSOD?

I have read what I can on this site about similar BSOD problems, but none really make sense.

I just do not comprehend how you get beyond this screen.

Is there someone that can explain the solution in the most basic of terms, that a tech challenged person like me can understand?

I know you just love folks like me...just look at it as a challenge!!!

Can you get into safe mode? Tap the F8 key rapidly as you reboot and you should be able to get in and do the checks suggested. Others will have better solutions I'm sure.

Unfortunately, no. Upon start up I get a screen telling me that Windows did not shut down properly and it gives five options to start up:

    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompts
    Last Known Good Configuration

    Start Windows Normally

All lead to the same BSOD.

I tried the rapid F8 on start up. It did give me a different screen , essentially the same stuff as above. Still blue.

    Thanks for the quick reply

It sounds like your computer is getting halfway done booting windows and is encountering a corrupted file, bringing the system to a halt.

The first thing I would do is a chkdsk in the hopes that fixing errors on the filesystem will fix your problem. You will need to boot from your Windows recovery cd and enter the recovery console (press "r" where it says press "r" to enter the recovery console at the first screen)

when you get into the recovery console, log onto your installation of windows (should be self explanatory) and then type the following in "chkdsk c: /r" and press enter. Note any errors and/or bad sectors.

Okay...This is where the fun begins...I found the recovery CD and put it in...Now how do I get the computer to boot off of it? I still get the BSOD.

No matter which start up option I choose I get the same result...BSOD...Even with Last Known Good Configuration.

Everyone, I really appreciate your help. Thank you for your time and expertise!!!

I checked out these links you provided:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm (I sit and type in awe that you have an understanding of what this says...so i moved on to the link below)

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...ery_consol.htm (This I understand a little better, but I do not have a START Button anymore)

From what I read on the first link I have to get into the BIOS and change the order of the drives that my computer boots from????? YIKES!!!!

It's much easier than you think.:) If you see a splash screen right at the beginning then hit the 'delete' button and you'll be in. Other pre-built systems will have different keys to access the BIOS. Once you're in, go to the 'Boot Options' and promote your CD/DVD as primary boot, usually by selecting it and hitting the '+' key until it's on on top, then save and exit with the CD in drive and will reboot automatically. Someone else will have to continue this as I haven't done a repair in years, thankfully.

Yes!!!! Progress...I am here: press "r" where it says press "r" to enter the recovery console at the first screen.

I need to clarify your instructions....type the following in "chkdsk c: /r".

My warning message says....Run CHKDSK /F.

    Can you please verify.

Great!:cool Just a bit more work for you to ensure that your drive and your memory are OK. Sometimes it's a failing hardware component that corrupts things and at times it just happens.

Grab Everest to find out what hard drive you have and go to the drive maker's site and download their drive tool to check it out. You can also run Memtest86+ to check your RAM. Run it overnight for the best results. This may be anal on my part, but at least you can eliminate a couple of things in case it happens again.
